Trouble while switching between AVG and DVI

my monitor is LG L204TW, it has both avi and VGA input cable connected, today i was trying to use it as an external display for my lappy (via VGA) but can't get this thing to work. it looks like the monitor only try to detect the input signal from the dvi plug, if there is no signal, then it goes straight to sleep, what a lazy boy!
and finally i had to poweron my desktop which is connected with the dvi cable,
then the minotor's on, and i can switch it to vga signal.

I think this is a fault of most LG monitors. I have one of their newer 19 inch LCD's and it is the same way. I have to make sure the monitor is off close the laptop, then open the laptop back up and then power up the LCD. Ridiculous crap. Need less to say I woulda tossed it but it was free.
