I bought tomana's dead HD4870 to see if it was worth it, and it sure as hell was!

BRB playing games :D

It's actually very meh.. crysis performance is about the same...

How'd you get it to work?

The oven?

Yes sir. I was chomping at the bit to try this trick. If it dies again I'm putting it in a vice and beating the piss out of it with a heat gun on full strength.

That's what she said.

but really man that's awesome. too bad the scoring sucks. Is this an issue with crossfire?

What do you mean scoring? With crysis I can have most settings on high/very high and get the same performance as anything else. The only lag I get is when I scope in.

RADEoN I'm thinking that piscian doesn't understand SMP doesn't == linear scaling, and isn't understanding the impact of Amdahl's law here in full force

I was refering to that. Thought he meant the additional card didnt get him any better FPS. I know it's not linear but you generally get something out of every card you add, though I know with Ati it's a little more hit and miss with newer games.

i have a friend with the exact same setup i7 and 4870x2 + 4870 he was able to play crysis very high 2650 X 1600 no AA at 40-50 fps with the catalyst 9.4 drivers

wow, it really sounds like you are CPU bound at this point.

I never thought a Core i7 920 would be a bottleneck :O

Best of luck though!

I don't think he's actually given #'s regarding the performance, or tested the improvement, but to clarify (because apparently the concept of a non-linear relationship is a tough one), at best he'll see perhaps a 30-40% performance gain over his 4870X2, if he was getting 30 FPS to start with, adding another 30% (which is roughly 10 FPS) he would get roughly 40 FPS, this change will not be noticable to human beings, assuming the original 30 FPS was constant, and not choppy (i.e: one second it renders 80 frames, one second it renders 2)

he did mention that he's running high/very high with no lag, just that the new 4870 didn't change performance much (which is understandable), especially since 30-40% is "perfect ideal world", and reality could be as low as 15-20% (which would be closer to 5 FPS, based on the 30 FPS example)

an overclocked I7 for that setup certainly isnt the bottleneck. its the fact that 3 ATI gpus usually dont scale worth a shit in many games. hell think how many games have trouble with just regular crossfire.

Except for STALKER Clear Sky, lol.

I kinda figured that, since most games aren't ATI flavored.

at the same time, most games aren't nVidia flavored, even with TWIMTBP.

anyway, from my experience of multi-GPU, more than 2 GPU is completely a waste, doesn't matter which camp it is, and the only exception only occur in some certain game that actually scale very well, but that just too rare to see..

that is why I stay with 2-GPU solution now :)

Any particular games that do scale well on CrossfireX? My 4890s and 40" 1080p TV are aching to get tested.

flogge, you'll scale fine with just two. It seems the third is more for bragging rights, if even that :\

Anyone have any benches they want me to run with 2 and 3 GPU's?

Agreed at 1900x1200 and below, but not so sure if that's the case at 2560x1600. I know I can comfortably play AoC, Crysis, Empire with 2x 4870 X2 CrossfireX enabled, where it really struggles with a single 4870 X2.
