SWMBO met Lorentz last night. Lorentz is the latest member of Chez Chugiak, a dual proc mobo running a single AXP 1800+ modded to MP. It would be running two but I somehow borked one of the processors and it boots to the BLACK screen of death.

So anyhoo, she says with some degree of sarcasm, "When are you gonna get the next computer?" Wanting to enjoy at least one more night in my warm bed I refrained from replying "As soon as I finish our taxes."

Until then, I aim to at least get Lorentz running at full capacity. What are people doing these days to mod an XP into a SMP processor? I don't wanna bork another one, so I wish to proceed with caution. But I figure a couple of 2800+ ought to do the trick. My board is a Giga-byte GA-7DXPW or whatever..the 760MPX version. Any suggestions on what to drop in it?

edit: OK, the 2800+ wants 333 MHz FSB, so that one is out.

To turn XP into MP, connect the last L5 bridge. The highest non 333mhz is 2400+ XP.

FOLD ON!!!

Yeah, that is how I borked the one processor. I'm curious what the latest package is and what's the best method.

I have a little experiece in this area, 5 duallys, all modded cpus. SMP is pretty easy actually. The best method I've found so far is, take a straight pin, insert carefully into the gap on the L-5. Wiggle around a bit, try to see the gold down in the hole. Take a drop of the silver paint, use the pin, push it in that gap, wiggle it around a bit, wipe off the excess. Let it sit to dry, plug it in. If that fails the first time, stick the pin back in, clean it out and try it again. It will work.

As for the other mods, I stopped popping and painting the top of the cpu..to much work. I use paint on the bottom side, many use the wire twist trick.

Just in case you don't have the site:D

The silver paint between the pins on the bottom side works great, the cpu sits flat so the hsf works right. If you screw it up? A toothpick cleans it up even AFTER it dries..Give it a shot:D

Fold on

Tahnks Bill!

I wonder if I can resurrect that other proc by wiggling the pin down in the gap. Worth a shot.

egad bill. If I ever go dually in the house I'll be sending the procs to your house strait from the egg ok? paypal some beverage money and we'd have a deal ya? good stuff man.
...sighs as a fly comes out of my otherwise empty wallet...

Actually the highest 266mhz XP is a 2600+. They released them in both the 266 and 333mhz flavors, although the 266 versions are harder to find. I have a couple of them in one of my duals. :)
