Im planning on upgrading from vista to windows 7 but want to do a clean install.

Only thing I dont like about that is having to re-install and patch my games so i was wondering. If I transfer my games to my backup hard drive will the registry keys from vista work with windows 7 if I move the game back to the same path they were installed in? I just wonder casuse people say windows 7 is based off vista.

Not many games use the registry.
They do however use the C:\Users folder on the C partition. So, if you backup those as well as the Program Files, you should be OK.

you could try, but its going to take a lot more work to identify the appropriate registry items, since a lot of the registry is OS related, and you wouldnt want to transfer that.
And it probably wouldnt work 100% anyway.

Far easier to just reinstall.

If you have a bunch of steam games, you can just install the steam client, and user their backup/restore stuff, or copy things from your steamapps directory.
