Tracking a stolen computer using F@H?

Just a few days ago, a computer in a lab I work in was stolen. It had Folding@home SMP on it, and has a static IP. It's possible to use folding@home to track the computer if it reconnects to get or upload a work unit, right?
 
They have helped with this kind of stuff in the past if you have the necessary paperwork from police and such. Give the forum a try and PM VJ's gang.

Yes, get a police report first then provide a copy or the necessary infos to Vijay Pande, director of the project. You can email him at pande@stanford.edu then you will see from there what needed to be done and if he can do this.

I would think... they might be able to track the name its folding under.... then which IP its coming from, as they've probably moved it to a new network. (new IP address)

And then you'd need to get the police involved at that point to subpeona the crook's ISP for who the IP address belongs to.
 
This is assuming the crook doesnt wipe the hard disk and reinstalls his own stuff ya...

Yep or at least uninstall the shit that he doesn't recognize or want.

Most crooks are unsophisticate, and want the free software on computers, so they don't wipe the OS or office software necessarily.
 
I am oh-so-glad I did a hackjob of a service installation for the SMP client. It'll run stealth. *crosses fingers*
