This must be the week for driving simulators. Last week it was the 360° Humvee sim, this week it’s Toyota showing off its driving simulator.

Big car makers such as Daimler and Honda Motor have similar simulators, but Toyota's is the first to move laterally and has the longest range of 115 feet front to back and 66 feet from right to left, engineers said. "It still needs some fine tuning, but we aim to start putting it to use in earnest from next April," said Takashi Yonekawa, a senior staff engineer at the centre.

Seriously... what is this good for? Could you really model in real-time things like suspension changes from the design process and have this simulator effect them to you with any accuracy? If so that's amazing.

It's good as an amusement park ride too :p

DisneyWorld's got lots of simulators to ride in. I love their Star Wars and Apollo 13 simulator. This would be a fun addition.

I don't really get these simulations though. Especailly the Humvee one. What makes what they're doing so special? Crysis blows it away in the real life factor and frankly the "simulation" aspect of it doesn't exactly seem to demand high precision. The largest factor I can see is that these are huge multidisplay systems, but would really syncing several systems together even for a heavily reduced Crysis (just an example, other games seem much more real than this simulation, even much older games) require that much computing power?

I have to be missing something, there must be something about syncing those panels that is very difficult to do. Otherwise, from my view I've always thought simulations were... really poor.
