Timed or Timeless?

Hello folks!

I was wondering if someone could explain to me how the timed and the timeless wu's work?

I am currently running timeless wu's and if I could go over to the regular wu's, i'd like to do it.

Until my A64 box is done, the only other box I have folding is a 650mhz P3 w/ 384MB.

The computer is on 24/7 and is idle 18-20 of those 24 hours.

So should I leave it at timeless or move it over to regular wu's? I'm just not sure that it has what it takes to process regular wu's in a reasonable timeframe...

reasonable timeframe...- there in lies your question which only you can answer.

The 650 will fold most anything short of QMD's, it will just take awhile, a long while. Anywhere from I'm guessing 3-8 days depending on the WU.

On the bright side, as a general rule the larger the WU, the more points per day (PPD) you end up with. So in the end you score more. I have a P2 450 which actually folded a 364 point big WU, scored ~50 PPD on that, almost 2x as much as anything else.

Of course, it took a week but..... :D

I really don't mind how long that the wu takes, as long as it is counted. IIRC, you could take 3 months to process a wu and you'd still get points for it, it just wouldn't be included with the research, which kinda defeats the whole point...

So if I switch my crappy P3 to regular wu's, will it finish the wu quickly enough to count scientifically?

Or even better, it there a way I can check the wu's that I have processed and see if the wu's was submitted in time to count scientifically?

In essance Stanford benchmarks your machine and will not giv eit anything it won't finish in time. This being said, I'm sure they assume your machine is on 24/7 and not doing anythign else...

This being said, Standford assigned one of my crappers a WU which would take something line 99.9% of the allowed time, 2 hours short of the 45 day deadline or something like that. This was a 300 MZH machine or something like that.

Your machine will finish anything you throw at it, honestly if it's on 24/7, and you have broadband, set it to large WU's. If you really don't care of frequancy of points, you will score more on these, if you get one.

On the console client, there is a file called unitinfo.txt which lists the download date (start date) and the deadline. Or EM III will do the same, I think the graphical client lists all this also automatically. EM III will yell if you will miss a deal line too.

You're only looking at part of my wu history. Here's the other half where I have been working on timeless wu's: Timeless WU's It's just like you said. 1105, 1106, 1107, 1108, & 1109 are timeless.

I did not have the client set to timeless when I installed F@H a couple of months ago.

Anyway, I downloaded EMIII (at your suggestion, :) ) and I switched back over to the regular wu's. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure that my wu's count scientifically.

Well, it's after midnight. I'm gonna go crash somewhere. (I'm exausted and finals suck! :D )

Stanford benches on a 2.8 Ghz Intel.
Then sets a time 10X + 2 days longer for the work units to be returned in.
So in theory a 300 Mhz boxen should just return the work units in time.
But your probably better sticking to sub 500 Mhz = Timeless, Faster = Timed.
That way you easily make all the dead lines unless you realy bog the box down with non folding work or games.
