Hello all. I run a dual cpu motherboard, Tyan 2895 that has two 254's AMD Opterons (2.8Ghz) and 4 Gb ram. I just built an Intel system, a 7200 cpu with 2 Gb ram for my son. I was surprised to see this computer startups to be fasters than mine even though I have a raptor 300GB, and his does not. It got me thinking if it is time to upgrade. I have an 8800GTX and play CoD4, WoW and Warhammer. I also encode video, program, and build websites. I would like to upgrade the 8800GTX but I think my Opterons would bottleneck me. What do you all think? Time to upgrade? and to what? Budget would be 1000 or below.
 
Why not give the boy your Opty rig and you just inherit the E7200 based system?

Was concern with power consumption. It would be a lot of watts just to play children games or watch some DVD's. If anyone will waste power, it is gonna be me :D
 
For 1000 you could get a brand new quad core gaming rig (you said you encode video and play games, so that'd be the way to go).

I hav been watching your thread a lot Athlon about your experience with the i7. There is no rush yet, but I am not really into the waiting game. Decision will come before the weekend.
