OK I've had this 6800 GT for 2 days now, and it just runs great & hot!
So am I nuts for doing a lap dance on the GPU and Heat sink?
Did it on my 5950 Ultra and yanked about 9c outta it.
I'll keep the pads on the mem and put AS5 on the GPU.
Wish me luck, you'll hear the screaming if it don't work

What on earth are you talking about?

5950 had a heatspreader. The 6800 series does not. I wouldn't lap that 6800 or else your gonna screw up your chip. Get a watercooling rig if you want to really cool it down.

OK....OK -- Lap the heatsink......

Never heard it called a lap dance before

Well back from the dead. Dam if I didn't forget to plug the monitor in.....NEARLY HAD A [H]ARD ATTACK

Yep folks as DanD says "don't lap the GPU"
Interesting the core appears to have a mirror on it! Real shinny but looks like glass and I bet would break in a [H]ardbeat.
Did lap the incredably cheep heatsink with some 660 paper, didn't take much.
Added some AS5, almost looked like AS was already on it :)
The PNY cooling solutions suck!
So I will be in search of a new cooling solution (that will be a different thread)
Well lets see the results:

26c room temp
before:
Idle : 57/38c
30 mins rthdribl @ 977x717 : 85/56c

After:
Idle: 53/38
30 mins rthdribl @ 977x717 : 82/56c

So while it isn't much the application of AS5 and a good LAP DANCE( :p ) does help.

To those that venture to do this, HEAR YE WELL! THE CORE IS GLASS,HANDLE WITH CARE!

Hey [BB] Rick James what's your room temp? and who makes the card and what clock speeds are you runnin?
