Thoughts on ultimate eyefinity setup (no bezel)

Was seriously contemplating making one of these then showing it to some investors, but I don't have the money to make one right now, but I thought I should share the concept with you guys as quite a few of us are still not too happy about the bezel situation but would love to have eyefinity.

There's a few different ideas on how this could work, but basically the end result would be the same any way it's done. It will be a rear projection setup but one that actually looks good.

First of all you need:

1. 3 projectors, you can make your own using plans from the lumenlab forums if you want a high res and replaceable bulbs on the cheap, I was thinking about using an led light source myself to make the bulbs last an extrememly long time, and be low on heat and electricity.

2. 3m vikuiti rear projection material, this stuff is key as it's an incredible rear projection material that can be used in all sorts of lighting conditions and retain a high contrast image. Stuff is expensive but you can buy the film and cut it for your needs.

3. Some type of glass/plexiglass for the actual display, you will put the film on this. Use 3 pieces angled the way you please.

4. Some sort of material to incase the back so there's no light disturbance from where the projector hits the back of the screen.

5. possibly 3 mirrors depending on your size limitations.

6. thin piece of plastic to place between each screen to avoid light penetration between the projectors.

It's easy to see what I'm getting at here. Basically you will be rear projecting onto 3 screens. The mirrors will be there if you want to make it have a small footprint like the alienware displays, an extra lens may be needed for proper calibration to the size you need, however those are usually fairly cheap.

The only display that's anything like this currently costs over $6000, building it this way would save you a ton of money and would have a higher resolution.

Thoughts?

Sounds good. Only problem is this will never be anywhere near the price of three commodity level LCDs. Besides, people keep mentioning the bezels, but it's not really an issue once you've actually used an Eyefinity setup. When all three monitors move in sync, your brains blends all movement into one and the bezels become a near non-issue. Bezel management is the only missing piece of the puzzle right now which AMD needs to fix ASAP (along with releasing a cheaper DVI DP adapter).

Thin bezel monitors will help but the bezels can only get so thin before it compromises the structural integrity of the LCD. But like I said, as an Eyefinity user, bezels are a non-issue.

Yeah but people keep mentioning them because it is an issue for a lot of us, I saw it up close and it is an issue for me still. Although nfs shift was pretty awesome with it bezel or not. Also this will allow you to use multiple aspect ratios for movies especially if you're wanting to preserve it like it was intended to be seen at the movies, this would appeal more to the avs crowd, but in that situation bezels would be a much larger issue.

As far as cost goes it really depends on the materials you use, especially if you go the diy way with the projectors. Keep in mind the only comparable product on the market is around $6000, and this would provide much better results at a much lower cost.
