Thoughts on this box?

Thinking about getting this box to get me back into folding. It would be a dedicated folder but it would be chilling here with me in my dorm, so I may use it occasionally for some processing of my own (most likely no gaming, in fact, no gaming at all). But I want it to be compact and be able to be put under my desk and out of my way.

What kind of PPD would I be looking at?

Not a bad little folder. You'd probably be looking at 10K PpD at stock speeds, maybe a little more depending on the work units. You'd want to run the new SMP2 client so you can get the bonus points from the new A3's so initially, until you complete your first 10 work units to qualify you for the bonus points, your points will be much less than this. However, once you complete 10 WUs against your passkey, you'll be in good shape.

folded in the past, or was that too long ago?

EDIT: That said, 10k for a ~500 box...could I do better?

depends how "big"ou want to go, case wise that is, and If you buy used

Way too long ago. The bonus system was just implemented last year. To qualify for bonus points, you'd have to have completed 10 A2 or A3 work units with the passkey configured into your clients. I don't think passkeys, let alone A2 or A3, existed back in 2005.

ehh shuttle's pretty clutch in size, imho. specifically for what i want and where it'll end up being at home.

obviously, getting stuff used will increase the value, and i'll probably start looking for deals but as a whole in terms of buying from newegg i mean, could i do better?

yeah there were no SMP clients back then IIRC. Could I fold under that name still and get the bonus system?

You will have to create a passkey, configure your clients with the passkey and your existing user name, and complete 10 SMP WUs. After your 10th SMP WU, you will be eligible for bonus points. The reason for doing 10 SMP WUs before you are eligible is to set a benchmark for your system(s) to ensure you can turn in the projects before the preferred deadlines. The bonus system was implemented to encourage folks to return work as soon as they can.

No, there was no SMP in 2005 and the passkey system is a recent addition (I believe it's only been around for about a year).

Yes, you can still use your old user name.

Yes, you can fold under that old username but you need to go to the stanford site linked below and request a passkey which you will copy into the client configuration. Once that client finishes 10 units while having the passkey in the config you will start getting the bonus awarded with each WU. Welcome back to the Fold.

I would try and pick up a used 1366 board and go to MicroCenter and pick up a i7 920 for $200.

Ditch the GPU (unless you plan on games and even then if it isn't a main gaming rig get a 9600GSO)

You might be able to do it for just over $500. This will let you do -bigadv WU if you wish with possibly getting 20k ppd (depending on OC) and then if you add in what ever GPU you end up with now or down the line.

Also, the windows version of -bigadv is coming sometime in the near(ish) future. This quite possibly means even better production with less RAM usage since it is based on the A3 core.

The rig you proposed is a good rig.... just limited with everything that is coming down the line.

Yeah that's another route I was looking at just now. Really have to think about whether I really NEED it to be a small case.

The GPU was added for folding, but it was a toss-in, dunno how good it is or not. I take it -bigadv is Linux client only? How much RAM would I need?

6GB is ideal. However, if you have a native installation of Linux, you can likely get by with 4GB but, if you buy a 1366 system, you'd likely be putting 6GB in it anyway.

There is what we know and what we are guessing....

Now:
An OC-ed i7 will get 17-20k+ppd
Minimum of 6GB RAM if you run all 8 threads
Good HSF, i7s run hot.
You can run this inside a linux VM, you can make your own or there are a few options to DL a pre made one.

Future (speculation)
Similar ppd, maybe a bit more.
Possibly lower, maybe even down to 4gb
Native windows support

8 threads in my linux install takes up to 5.6GB.... you might have done some tweaking, but that is well above my skill lvl.

True. That is why I said 6GB is ideal. My system with 3 GPUs is only using 5.3GB.

I trained a guy a bit over a year ago and had to beat that expression from his vernacular. That and all his other frat boy idioms.

On the interwebs I guess it's cool though ;)

Antec 300 - ASRock X58 Extreme - Core i7 920 - 6GB - Corsair H50

Overclock that to 3.8GHz and bask in 26K PpD glory.

heh, i have a similar deal at home. that will be folding soon, hence my hesitance to go to an i7 off the bat.

pretty clutch imho, brah, totally legit you know broseph? ;)

no but really, i gotta OC my home rig and that'll start folding. that said, would it be worth it to get a video card? how much would a 250 give me?

Very hard to say as there are so many different projects out there right now and they vary so much. For a 250, figure 5000 to 6500 PpD.

If your not gaming, a cheap 8800 GT can be had for 50$, that's 4-4.5 k ppd

That's if you keep then stock. 6k if you in a OC-ing mood.

Get two, better than a single 250.

He'll, even just one would save enough to make up the new price difference

A 216 SP GTX 260 is the best bang for the buck at the moment, IMO.

If your doing a single card, get a used GTX260 for the same price, get ya an extra 1-2kppd.

If you set on getting a 250, Give me a PM

Will let you know, I'm going on a trip to MC next week. Most likely will walk away with a Q9300. I'm thinking the cost of entry for an i7 is a little too much and space is definitely a premium right now :(

Better then nothing, I guess...

You should consider buying used for the CPU, those almost never go bad

If he can find a deal on one used sure.... but MC is selling them for $140 new. Not bad for a 45nm quad.

Hmm, I was looking on newegg...would it be worth it go with the box that I'm currently contemplating or should I wait a little bit and go for a Dual E5504 box? I can build a relatively decent one for what seems like 1400, which is doable a few months from now. Obviously, I could run the -bigadv. Thoughts?

Most likely, it would double as a WHS box, but those requirements are really minimum.

I am worried that the E5504 @ 2.0ghz will not get you enough points per day to merit the investment. I personally would not use anything less then the E5520/E5530.

I would look into getting a Core i7 and a nice cooler. With Overclocking, you could come darn close to what the Dual E5520/E5530 systems are getting. Mr Tobit can provide you some ppd numbers on what to expect.

I have 2 native Linux boxen with only 4GB each running -bigadv. That would be the lowest memory I would configure.

Ugh I hate you all, making me want to spend more.

How much would a good i7 box cost? Assume I got the 920 from Microcenter. (I'm not asking you all to do the legwork, I just dont know if there are any good deals or what the bear minimum would need to be in this case)

i7-920 $200-$225 at microcenter
