Those Crazy WU's

Yeah, I noticed a lot of 2653 is giving less PPD on many of my dual-core boxes. E6300 at stock usually average 1150ppd with those WU but now, it's down to 995ppd. Even my T7200 laptops which used to average 1400 ppd now get just 1000ppd. I guess they are getting more complicated...

Well, we can moan about the loss in points (and I have), but if these more complicated WU end up helping out.... it is more than worth it.

dang i picked up my first 3065 and it sucks! I went from about 16mins a frame to about 25mins a frame! AND my 2140 runs hotter now by about 3C!!!

Well, I don't know about temperature and different WUs, but these new WUs definitely decrease PPD as has been mentioned here and other threads. So far they seem to be in the minority, though. Some of the new WUs do provide similar PPD to the P2653 like the P3065. The P3064 however are much lower. YMMV.

Yeah I just picked up a 3064 on me E6600 which is good for 2200 PPD... its now sitting at 1418PPD... 800PPD drop? I might need to CTRL-C and reboot that machine cuz something is goofy...

It's the slower WU not your machine. I have a 3065 on one of my machines worth 2144 points, yet the PPD is approximately 700PPD less than that of a P2653.

3065 blows.

It's slow and has one of the tightest preferred deadlines I've seen. If they keep sending them, I'll have to rethink my dual-SMP setup. This is the first work unit I've seen that I can't hit the preferred deadlines with my split quads.

I just noticed one of my workers picked up one of the 3065s. Looks like about an 800PPD drop predicted for it. Other SMP WUs end up completing with 2+ days before the preferred deadline, the 3065 is going to be squeaking in with only about 3-4 hours before the preferred deadline (predicted).

I hear you there the points should be about 3000-3500 for that WU.. its just sooo damn slow... Even my Q6600 @ 3.6 just makes the pref deadline with 22minutes to spare... I mean wow... other units I make with days to spare... I don't get it... I really wish they would make the points system to be this:

If you have a setup PPD should fluxuate a bit 100-500 PPD would be acceptable, we all have invested and donated toward the project and are working toward the common goal, but instead it is the luck of the draw on what WU you get. Some people could manipulate the system and reset the work folder and purposely force higher PPD WU's which isn't for the common good fo the project because the WU's are issued and when the deadline passes they have to be handed out again once again delaying the project overall.

I hope they look at it soon. Maybe institute a penalty or something for not making the final deadline?

Regardless I take what I get and in the long run the 10% fluxuations plus won't matter as much.

Here's the funny thing: Cores 0 and 1 in Windows SMP are working on 3065 and are getting 1660 PPD. Cores 2 and 3 are working on 2653 are getting 2372 PPD, which is normal. You'd think if 3065 needed a ton of memory bandwidth, or some other resource, my 2653 unit would be impacted in some way. That's what used to happen with 2610s. Like others have noticed, it looks to me like a ton of steps but crappy points. More brute-force nonsense from Stanford.

Yeah it uses as far as I can tell exactly the same resources as the 2653, but loses about 800 PPD.. Makes little sense. I wonder how the AMD's work on it.. .maybe it is optimized for some other form of computation? GPU, AMD or something?

Whenever I receive one of the new slower WUs such as a P3065, my other SMP instances speed up for some reason. Meaning, their PPD increase above normal. However, the P3065 WU processes extremely slowly. It's as if my systems don't want to process the new WUs or are lazy about it and appropriate a greater portion of their processors' capabilities to the P2653s. It's very strange, but there's something inefficient about these new WUs.

I have a P3065 WU on one of my AMD machines. It will barely make the final deadline. Forget about AMD hardware with these WUs. A Phenom will definitely be better but by how much is anyone's guess.

Hmm I wonder if we should run 3 SMP clients when we get these units if in fact they are using less resources!

I'm working on a 3062 right now that FahMon is showing as being worth 1732 points, but the list Evil posted on the first page shows it as being worth only 1324 points. Hmm.

The project summary page says 1732, must have changed since Evil posted that.

No, it would just slow everything else down and some of the very slow WUs like the P3065 might not make the deadline on older systems.

I wish Stanford would change some of the other WUs to more accurately reflect work/time processed.

It must be me taking up all the good 2605 and 2653 units. Since I've gotten the E6400 up and running, my only SMP box, I've done about 130 WU's and they've all been 2605/2653 execpt for 10. Not that I'm complaining.

LOL I bring up a new Quad and what do i get? 3062 and 3052... grr not showing what the new 3.2 Ghz Quad can do with that...

I've got 2 of thsoe that I am chug'n through righ tnow.. what are they 1414 pts? and take a full day!

Yeah, I had to shut down the second client in my dual Opteron machine or it might not have made the deadline... :(

I've got:
5x 2653 = 1760pts
1x 3065 = 2144pts
1x 3062 = 1732pts

WTF is a 3065:eek::confused:

My headless Q6600 has 2 clients, but it's making 24 min / 1%
no to bad..... your poor opties though.....
I had to drop the second client when the system grabbed one of these. Even with only one client it takes 29-30 minutes per frame with little else going on except some surfing and a TV app playing. The system is running at only 2.8GHz, though. Too bad I can't clock it higher.

Just picked up at 3065 2144 pointer, slowed things down a bit
Will take over a day, frame time right around 16 min 20 seconds, 2 cores @3.3ghz.
On a good note the other 2 cores picked a 2653, 1760p, versus the usual
1440p. Frame times seem fast about 10:22, usually closer to 11:10 or so.
If I could get 2 of those, it would be close to 5000ppd output

I think we are going to have to start earning our SMP points if we get too many more of these monsters.

3065 isn't so bad because the value is high and the preferred deadline is loose. I feel bad for Apollo though because this sounds like another slap in the face to AMD contributors. If they keep this up, they'll have to rename the program Intel SMP.

Why did the wifes comp, a OC-ed 5200 X2 just get a 3065?!

I seem to start threads that go on forever ...... kinda funny ..

The WU are only gonna get bigger and bigger ..

I have a funny feeling that the Q6600 will be like a E2140 / E2160 in a year or so ....

They will make the new WU's that require 12MB cache ... (Just my theory)

Only time will tell ....
