this UPS any good?

Generally with APC, there are none. I have a BackUps RS-800 which is great.

That may be a model they're phasing out, since I saw them on sale for a little less than that (I think) at BJs yesterday.
 
I have heard decent thigns about them, and concidering the price and the name, it is a very good deal for a consumer grade ups. When my smartups 900 finally dies, I may even replace it with one of those.
 
The smartups has a much nicer set of electronics in it.

I've got the 1500 model of that ups, its nicer than the regular backups.

The smartups does a full sine wave, and better voltage regulation than the backups. Of course you gotta pay for it.

I like mine. Its got a simple wattmeter in the control panel that can tell you how much power the connected systems are using.

On a side note, ive got a XS1500, and they only list the RS1500 on their website.

Supposedly the XS is sold in stores and is slightly feature crippled compared to the RS series. Something about the voltage regulation only raising it or lowering it or something, but not both like the RS? Im not clear on the diff.

Yeah, I know, I deal wiht ups's on a daily basis at work, thats where I got the one I am useing now. The problem wiht this one is that the electronics in it are starting to die. It generally slides out of battery calabration in about a month, wakeign me up in my room when it decides the (new) batteries are dead. That being said, I dont feel the need to pay the premium for a smart ups, when somethign that is made for normal desktop use is so much cheaper. If i can grab another newer smartups from work and just replace the batteries, I will.
 
I picked up the XS1500 model (retail vs website) when my BUP1000 started showing signs of dead batteries. It's a great unit, and well worth the price.

I've dealt with APC stuff for commercial applications, and they make fantastic products. Which is why I run my home stuff on it too.

No, I'm not a shill for the company, just a satisfied consumer that on one very windy day prior to purchacing a ups, watched his nice new Sun system, power cycle 5 times within 30 seconds durring severe weather.
