AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Retail (winnie)
1GB (2x512) Patriot DDR PC-3200 (2-2-2-5)

Explanations: (get that out of the way now)
The GA-K8N was the only decent nF4 board in stock.
Bought the 9CM for it's low noise (cranky wife).
I have great ventilation in the case.

Objective:
FSB 258Mhz
CPU 2.6Ghz (258x10)
HTT 1032Mhz (258x4)
RAM 215Mhz 2-2-2-5 (5:6 div)

Does that sound reasonable? Want to squeeze what I can from the CPU without having to loosen the timings on the RAM.
 
i got a question. is that patriot ram TCCD?? cause if it is, im pretty sure you could run it 1:1 with like 2.5-3-3-8 timings with about 2.8vDimm. also, why are you going for 258 htt instead of 260, so you can really have 2.6 ghz instead of 2.58. just wondering, i wish i could get my 2800+ up to 2.4 ghz. crappy buffalo b-line ram! *shakes fist at tower*. good luck on getting to 2.6ghz.
 
oc's are always luck of the draw...if that is a new 05 chip with ccbid stepping, then you might not see 2.6...ive maxed at 280x9=2.52ghz on my 3200 at 1.75v. 255x10@1.75v gave prime errors, so i opted to make the most of my ram with the lower multiplier. I think in this scenario the chip will be what will hold you back, but there are still some good ones to be had, just not as abundant as pre-week48.

Based on what I have read (I know, just cause it's on the interweb...) AMDs perform a bit better with tight timings and as well as most games. I would rather have low latency than more bandwidth. I went with 258MHz on the FSB becuase the Patriot RAM seems good up to 215MHz @ 2-2-2-5
 
oddly, mine performs better with this much higher speed with slightly relaxed timings, as opposed to the lower speed and 2-2-2-5. I was originally pissed thinking i wasted my money on the 440, but I was wrong. check out everest home edition or sisoft sandra for memory benching, for reference right now my memory at 280 2.5-3-3-7 is 35.5ns latency, 2640mb/sec write, 7687mb/sec read in everest. Will edit with 2-2-2-5 and divided scores in a few mins. (hope I do not eat my words!) *edit* ok new settings 250x10+2.5ghz (so cpu is the same) ram at 208mhz 2-2-2-5.everest reports 42.4ns latency, 2500mb/sec write, 6122mb/sec read. Honestly I also felt the load to my desktop was slower too. I offer this for your reference, if you would liek to keep the lower timings that is fine, but for me it seems like poor choice. I could run more tests if you would like, dunno what else would test the memory well. I think the jump from 208 -> 280 is enough that the slight loosening of timings is overshadowed...your 258 would probabaly be high enough to warrant similar results.

I appreciate the input. I tend to forget "results may vary" :D

I will do plenty of testing once Newegg graces me with the components. It's like waiting for christmas morning all over again.

Any suggestions as to what is the quickest way to determine optimal memory timings. I know a few apps that will let me adjust the FSB and timings within XP, is that a good idea or should I just stick with the old tried and true bios-reboot method.
 
clockgen is pretty nice for adjusting base speeds, things like timings and htt multi can be adjusted with nvidia's ntune program. As far as memory, the best way to test it for stability is still memtest, so the mem should be bios/memtest. cpu can be adjusted in windows as well as fine tuned from there. for example, I boot at 275x9, then start core center once in windows to apply the needed voltage (bios doesnt apply nearly enough), then I use clockgen to bump me up to 280htt.
