I am on a tight budget this year for x-mas, mom lost her job etc.
well i have $300 to spend on whatever my heart desires, i will add $100 to this.

$400 to spend, i am getting a second 512pc3200 ram stick which will be around $80

$320 to spend on a video card. With my system specs in my sig, what would give me the biggest improvement in games?

Anything you buy will show a significant improvement over your FX5200. However, I'd get the 6800GT with the $400 and put off buying the RAM until later.

6800GT
 
In my opinion, if you don't really need the full power of a 6800GT, get a 6800nu along with a better PSU than the one you have. You might even have enough money to upgrade your memory if you shop carefully.

Otherwise, get a 6800GT and gather a little more money to get a better PSU (selling your old vid card and psu can get you enough money to get a new one).
 
Good point, what kind of PSU is that? You might have issues if you put a 6800GT in there and expect it to work :) You need a pretty beefy PSU for these newer cards, so if that's a 300W generic, you may be in trouble. If it's a quality 300w, you may be ok.

it's a foxlink...so it's generic. should i just go with a 9800pro? if so, 128mb or 256mb?
 
get a 6800nu then u can get your ram AND a psu as well. Do all 3, you will see a noticable difference when playing games, and when i say noticable, think 20-30 fps in most games.

the 6800gt would probably work okay with 300w too, but if you are afraid get the 6800nu

the 6800 oc 128mb, better than the 9800pro 256mb? I would think that in the longrun i would need the extra memory that the 9800 give me. Wouldn't in a couple years the 6800 would get bottle necked by the abount of ram?

The 6800 with 128mb will still smoke the 9800 with 256, this year and in the next ones regardless of the extra memory.

Well my first thought is - if your mom lost her job - why in the hell would you be spending so much on a video card??

But if I were to answer without saying the above, the 6600 GT AGP should be out by Christmas time - and for around $200 that would be the best deal for the money and a major performance upgrade from that Geforce "5200" that you have. Use the extra $120 to buy your mom something nice.

to end the money thing, my mom has a job ready to go as soon as she wants, shes on unemployment and want to fix up the house while she has the free time. We are not low on money, we are just trying to spend less. we have $12,000 in a bank account from an inheritence. we are just trying not to spend as much as we usually would.

WELL SHOOT, i guess I will take back this Nforce4 SLI with two 6800 Ultras back to the store and get you some ram instead... (knew I should have asked first) :eek:
 
you will be able to get the 6800 gt for 320 by XMass get it and a mid range enermax 350 and your in
