Thinking about going water cooled

Water Worth it?

Allright guys, heres the deal. I have this screaming Vantec Tornado 92mm on my SLK948U. Im oc'd from 2 to 2.5ghz, details in sig.. running at 38C idle with the fan on full blast.. now the thing is, i want to possibly go water and quiet this son of a bitch down. My friend at college (username on here Spleeze), told me that with this cooling I'm getting 'damned near water cooling temps'.. his opinion about water cooling is that its more or less 'fun and quiet', and that the temps arent that much benifical. his rig is here if anyone cares to see

The thing with my overclock is that when i play games, my temps run to about 62C, with the onboard temperature sensor that is.. I would just like to know what everbodys opinion is on it... any input from people who have gone from high speed air to water cooling is very helpful.. so do you guys think its worth tolerating the sound or can i get alot better temps?

Unless you go to pelts or the like you can't go below ambient room temps.
My Exos is about 2c better than my SLK800 and the sound of a jet engine Delta.
I am enjoying the quite!

Water is quieter and (at least for me) lowered my load temps, my idle temps didn't really change. IMO well worth it, and it was definately fun :D

i used to have a SLK800 with a 80mm vantec tornado on top. with my 1700+ oced to 1600mhz i would get about 120deg F i went to a thermaltake aquirius II system and the temps where alittle higher at about 135deg. F i have since changed to a maze 4 1/2" line 120mm heatercore style radiator with a via 1300 (370gph) pump and the temps went down to about 100deg i now have a 2500+ barton running at 2300mhz and it stayes at about 110deg all temps are at load using prime 95.

i would say if you take the $50 spent on the bigg copper cooler and the $15 for the screemer fan and compare that with a cheap ($110) system such as the one i currently use that the added quiet and cooling power are very much worth it.

i would for a cheap system get the folllowing
77 bonneville heater core $20
via 1300 pump $25
dtek TC-4 waterblock $25
10 feet 1/2" tube $15
t fitting for filling bleeding $2
2 120mm slow fans $20

total $107 and you will have a very good cooling system IMO. if you want get a better pump or replace the t fitting with a reservoir.

Your friend is using a lower end watercooler without question, which is why he wouldnt have seen drastic temp differences. an 80mm Radiator with 2 moderatly quiet fans is not going to do alot for you over most heatsinks. 120mm heatercore or dual 120mm heatercore and now were talking

no way dude, sorry but i have a pretty [H]ard watercooling rig... i have a 120mm heatercore rad with 2 120mm fans on it... 1/2 id tubing... a tdx waterblock... and an aquaXtreme 12v pump which rocks...

check your facts a bit

like karnick said, i told him that he's probably not gonna see much better temps with a w/c rig as opposed to his big ass thermalright heatsink and loud screaming fan. However i told him that it's fun to set up as well as a hell of a lot quieter, and his rig could use some quieting. haha

I dunno, I have a pretty average (120mm h/c+tdx+D4) w/c and temp dropped by 10C from a thermalright SP-94. Works well for me :D

Spleeze is a bit confused about the advantages of watercooling. That 38C IDLE is about the temperature you will get on a good watercooling system LOAD. The advantage of watercooling is not in the idle temperatures. A good heatsink will keep a processor very close to ambient while idle. As was pointed out, at load the temps skyrocket up to 62C. Because of waters specific heat capacities it can handle the increased load much better. The processor will very rarely vary by more than 5-10C between idle and load.

You will benefit from watercooling in both performance and in reducing noise.

I'd probably get close to the same temps on air, but I like the look of my water and it's silent. As soon as I put on my NB passive heatsink i'll have just two 120's in my system, both for the radiator and running at ~7v so nearly silent :)

why would being more quiet and the cool factor not make it worth while? Keeping the system quiet was a huge push for water cooling for me...even before the cooling advantages.

My thoughts exactly, plus if you enjoy a fun challenge doing a water rig is great. I get a lot of personal satisfaction out of engineering and building mine, shooting for a balance of performance, looks, and quietude. The fun factor can't be beat.
