I been thinking about goin Intel for my next SFF. With the lack of good mobo's im having a hard time deciding. I dont game, and use onboard video. Lately I been using CCE to encode dvd video. Im happy with my system so far, but like everyone else I always want more performance :D . My system is a X2 3800 @ 2.8,Epox MGF6100-M, 1G GSkill PC6400...

Any opinions on whether to go for Intel now? Wait for better mobo's...quadcore? Id really like a good bump in performance so im up in the air about switchin now or holdin off. Thanks.
 
I would grab an e4300 now and quad core when it comes down in price.

Relative performance comparison:
e4300 OC'd to 3.2GHz x 2 = 6.4GHz
3800 X2 to 2.8GHz x 2 = 5.6GHz

Factor in intel's ~25% performance advantage = 5.6GHz vs 8GHz.

So it would probably save you alot of encoding time. The only question is how much of an OC you will get, especially with onboard vid. None of them have a PCI-E lock, so you are at the mercy of your components cooperating.
 
I may have to do that. I wanna play anyhow :D I just wanna make sure if I go with the 4300 I can do it reliably with the onboard video. This X2 3800 setup is a rock so far. Guess I need to read up on some mobo's here and decide. Tough choice with lack of good mobo's , and im a very impatient person...lol. Thanks.
 
I think the only real choices are these three:

ASUS P5L-MX ***

All of them should do about the same. The rest have fsb caps or no OC options at all. I had the MX running at 425, before I ran out of juice for the CPU. Then I also realized that the PCI-E must have been running at 160MHz! Apparently... not good for the video card, so I had to lower my overclock. Was also using a SATA controller card, which may have had something to do with it. Others run into SATA problems well before then.

With a cheap SATA RAID controller card and onboard video, the sky could be the limit... I just don't know if the onboard vid would be a limiting factor or how it would react to a high PCI-E frequency.

This is whats stopping me, or making me think wait. Remember how some of the Intel shuttles could OC like a bat outta hell with a 2.4C? But only if you used an AGP card and ditched the onboard video. I think im gonna wait and see how others do with the 4300 first. Thanks!
