When installing the Thermalright SP-97, how do you know how tight to screw the four mounting screws? Is there some sort of tension springs or something?

there is a spring on the screws which prevents you from screwing any further down. if you overtighten you will most likely strip your screws and kill your core.
 
I tightened the screws on my SP-97 until they wouldn't turn anymore. The springs on the screws only let you tighten so much.
