Thermal Probe location

Hi.

Does anyone know the best place to put a thermal probe on an Athlon 64 CPU?

On my AMD 2400XP I put it under the the CPU but im no long able to do so due to the amount of pins.

Would placing it on top of the CPU damage the probe or make it read wrong?

I'll be using a Thermal Take Venus 12 cooler, Thermal Take Hardcano 2 thermal Probe and Arctic Silver 5.
