i am going to apply some new thermal paste here once it comes in, im wondering is it is ok to mix two diff kinds of thermal paste, i got the regular stuff now and its barely even there. do i have to clean it off somehow?
 
I usually clean paste off with Isopropyl Alcohol. I'd stick to just one kind of paste; so if it was me, I'd clean it off and put some AS5 on it.
 
ok..first things first. You shouldn't do any mixing in applying thermal paste (with the notable exception being thermal epoxy). Second...you didn't mention what kind of thermal paste you have on (the regular stuff comes in many varities) Two major kinds are: Pastes (white goo) and TIMs (Thermal interface materials) TIM are those that come usually with Packaged heatsinks, then look like thick pads that resemble stickers and those are a pain in the ass to clean off. The white goo is easy to clean off usually by paper towel and a little rubbing alcohol. As for the TIM, it's easy to clean off the CPU core with some rubbing alcohol (usually) but its hard to clean off of the heatsinks for which I recommend Goo Off.
 
use 99% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth to clean off the old thermal paste. this ensures better heat transfer once you've applied the new thermal paste
 
well my uncle is the one who put my pc together and when i switched to my new mobo the other day i noticed very little thermal paste on the cpu core and heatsink. it is the white goo stuff so ill just take a paper towel to it i guess. what kind of paste do u all recommend? i heard a lot about that arctic silver stuff so i might order some of that
 
FYI...
DO NOT use contact electronics cleaner.(in the spray can)

While this will remove the old thermal past like nothing else....it also will disolve the spacing pads on the processor(the little spongy things that holds the heatsink stable on the processor.)

Without thinking I used some to get some crusted thermal paste off of a old PIII and it worked wonders....then I used it on an athlon processor....DOH. Melted those footies right off...

I ended up using a straight razor and shaving off a set from a dead processor

It wasent too big a deal but can you see the look on someones face if they sprayed that stuff on and watched their footies disolve away heh
