So don't smear it all over your CPU. If you follow the directions there should be no problem. Just put a very thin layer on the core itself, then there's no reason for it to smear or squish out onto the rest of the chip.
I compared As to Ceramique and found no real difference.
If your worried about putting too much on, put a real thin layer on you die and wipe it off with a clean rag(not real clean,no alcohol or anything, then put a a real thin layer on your heat sink and slap that puppy on. All should be as it should be.

I second that. I was scared as hell when I applied it for the first time some weeks ago. I did it under supervision of a "more experienced PC builder", and all went fine, it's really not that hard.
If you're affraid of smearing it all over the place, may I recommend not to drink too much coffee prior installing the HS.

i didn't even have that much, i read the instructions like 20 times and memorized them i was so worried of screwing up..... oh well, thats waaaaayyyy behind me now
agreed. you aren't going to short anything out even if you don't follow the directions, unless you spill it all over your motherboard. as said before, i also didn't notice a difference b/t silver and ceramic.
why are so many ppl sacred of shorting stuff out?

I have seen a lot of people comparing AS5 with AS-Ceramique. The results are are barely noticeable. I use AS-Ceramique myself and it does the job. I'm pretty sure AS5 would have done the job also.
And about the confidence thing, they're right. A few weeks ago, I was afraid to change my heatsink I recently bought. I just read the instructions on the AS site and my heatsink's company site to double check and then went to work. It was very simple and it was my very first heatsink installation. Nothing to it.

He is saying that it acts as a very tiny capacitor, not a wire, therefore won't short anything out.
you just dont' want any on places its not supposed to be. i've heard that it can eat up the motherboard(the PCB itself).
edit: anyone know a place(online) to get thermal paste w/ free shipping. cheapest i can find AS5 or ceramic is $6 or $4 respectively, and same price on shipping for each item...essentially doubling the price.
