If you are doing lots of video work, you can't beat the prime lenses. Look at the 85 1.8 and 50 1.4 for affordable ones that are both nice portrait lenses and good for video.
I agree.. for video I would pick the 50 f/1.4 over the 85 f/1.8..... especially on a crop body... another suggestion is getting a nikon to canon adapter and using a nikon lens on your canon body.. some great and cheap nikon lenses have manual aperture ringsgreat for video...
Or the Zeiss 1.4 or 2 are great lens for video.. since zeiss lenses are manual it works great for video.. focusing with zeiss lens is awesome... I wish canon's lens were as smooth as them. It was a hard decision for me between the zeiss 50mm MP f/2.0 and the Canon 50L f/1.2...... but when amazon offered a new one for $1308 for the gold coin/cybermonday deal, that was way to hard to pass up.....
Or a 28 1.8 for a little wider. The uber cheap prime lenses have crap manual focus rings that are useless for video work.
Zooms are nice, but you don't get that cinema depth of field and it is VERY hard to zoom and maintain any sort of focus on a dslr without lots of extra equipment and/or practice.
Only the two Canon 24mm primes can come close to the Zeiss 21.
On another note, it would be nice to know why Sigma has problems with the 50 and 30mm primes, as the 85 is quite nice.
Two more questions,
What do you guys think of the 100mm f2.8L Macro Lens, I know the focus isn't that great for Video. But how is this Lens in the Pro photo World?
So then do you guy's think I should pass on the 18-135 kit lens, and just get the body?
Personally, if I were you, I'd get the kit 18-135. Its a decent walk-around lens and great for 95% of users who purchase a Canon crop sensor camera and the price in the kits is good (especially if you buy from the refurb store as you know). Yes, there are much better lenses, but sometimes you have to make do until you have the budger you want. You will want some primes for any sophisticated video work in addition to that though.
The 100L is a fantastic lens - one of my favorites. It manually focuses fine for video. I don't use autofocus in videos becuase it still sucks on all dslrs.
I had that lens, and it never got used (100 f/2.8). I only used it for macro. It was too zoomed in unless I was doing headshots...
I would also pass on that 18-135 kit lens... and maybe look at the 15-85... I have heard great things about that lens....
But I would say save up and buy a used 24-105L........
Hey, Thanks for the Advice guys, I used the 100L Macro on the Video shoot that I did I thought it was a great Lens. However, I found that it only was a really short turn of the focus ring to go from Close Up to Infinity, where as the Zeiss Compact Primes you have to turn it a lot more to go from Close Up to Infinity, which in turn make in easier to pull focus especially on a dolly shot.
How is the focus on a 18-135, is it anything like a 18-55 because I thought the focus was awful on that, I am not even sure I could use it for Video.
Do you do mostly Portrait work? If so I could see how this lens might not be so great for your work. I think I sort of need to figure out better what my needs will be.
I like the 24-105L and I like the photos that come out of it the only problem is the f4 aperture I really don't think Its Fast enough for Video.
Thanks Again guys for all the help!
Just trade a 70-200 f4IS for a 50 1.2, so now have 28 1.8, 50 1.2, 100L, and 135L. I've almost caught up to darktiger...
