 Hey poeple. I felt my cases top the other day and was all like, woah, I can fry up some eggs on that skillet. That's when it hit me to modd on the ever popular blowhole. I'm too lazy to modd so this is a big deal for me, but I need a noob's help getting started to modd the top. I know I have to like measure the thing and crap and cut it out. My problemo is how the hell am I gonna cut out a hole on top of there. I need some consulting before I screw this up and have to fork out another 80 bucks for a new case

I'd recommend a holesaw if you've got one, and pre-drill the pilot hole with something tiny. Then saw away.

Or, use a jigsaw, with a 'wood' blade. The blade will be ruined after 10 inches, but they give wonderfully smooth cuts with aluminium. If your case is steel, forget the wood blade thing, it would only last 2 inches.

I can file it down, I don't have crap yet and need to know what I can get cheap to modd out a hole

Whatever you do, dont try to drill a bunch of holes and file it down. I thought about it whenI was in the same situation you are now because I wanted to save some money. I ended up not doing it, because I realized that it would look like crap.

I strongly suggest a hole saw, perhaps you can borrow one if you dont have one...

A jigsaw isnt bad either if you have a steady hand. I used a jig to cut two holes through plexi for my heater core shroud. I have never done it before but it worked beautifully :). You might want to clamp the case between two pieces of plywood beforehand, though, so the metal doesnt wobble up and down.

Best of luck to ya.

hey do I just keep twisting with a hole saw, or do I have to hook it up to a drill, oh and if it's too small, can't I just cut out a bunch of holes till it resembles the big 80mm hole

unless you want to sit there and file away and have a messed up circle, don't just drill a bunch of holes.

The holesaw does hook up to a drill.

What ever you use, you dont really have to make it a perfect circle. You should get as
round as you can and find some molding to place around the edge. The molding will take
shape of a circle that looks damn nice. Or you could just install an exaust fan on the outside
top of the case, instead of the normal inside.

And if you do use the hole saw, get some cutting oil to go with it. It'll make your life a whole lot easier.

I used a dremel, and about 2 cutoff wheels. Then I bought some Door Edge Molding at the local pep boys, and put that around it. It looks beautiful, and the molding was only $4, with enough for a few more holes. If you go with a 120mm fan, use a CD to measure the hole - they are exactly 120 mm :D

I vote dremel. But use a reinforced (sp?) cutoff wheel. They last a LOT longer than the standard cutoff wheels.

I don't think I've ever seen a readily available hole saw that big...I woul assume it would be pretty expensive....I say use a jigsaw with a metal blade and clean up witha file or dremel with a grining bit.

I did that... and looks great if you're patient enough :D

$15 or less

Not too bad. They are cheaper tools, but, they'll do!

120mm=4.75 inches

Oh yeah those, I wasn't sure what the hell a hole saw was at first. And I gotta get a drill to go with it too, oy. But I'm gonna modd two fans up there, each sdie by side, and it'll look, and push more air, better too. I might get tyhe holesaw set, cause not sure if I have enough for anything else, cause I also gota get the drill as well, and I need another 512 stick of memory before my lan party which eill cook my garage, heheh. That's why I need this done as soon as possible :D

So, looks like I'm gonna buy all the stuff I need( drill-wise) tomorrow hopefully, any Ideas what I should get for the cutting out part. Still not sure which one to get yet

what do you mean the cutting out part?
just follow these basic steps and you'll be fine

-buy drill, hole saw, file, and/or some molding (and possibly glue for molding), and a fan and fan grill for the blowhole
-attach the hole saw to the drill by opening the chuck, inserting the shaft part of the hole saw, closing it, and tightening it
- drill a pilot hole on the top of your case which is where the center of the hole will me
-then keep on drilling down with the hole saw till it goes thru.... make sure you keep it straight...
- file down the edges a lil bit and/or attach a molding to cover the sharp and rough looking edges
- take a regular drill bit that will go thru your case and switch it with the hole saw on your drill
- measure... make sure you do it carefully or you screw up and cant secure the fan
-drill out four holes for the fan
-attach fan and grill
-take pics
-put it on this thread
-CELEBRATE!

you guys are forgetting the TOTAL n00b advice...

"If your PC is too hot to touch...QUIT touching it!!!!"

heh...sorry, couldn't resist. :D Carry on.

why quit touching it, its fun to touch hot metal and singe your skin and possibly brand an image on ur arm..........

You should put a bunch of knobs, buttons and pretty lights on top of case so you can touch shiny stuff all day long

heheh, nobs... shiny...... ooooooh lemme touch. anyways I finished my top mod. I put 2 80mm fan holes up there side by side and it's exhausting double the air. The first hole didn't go too well cause I used a shit drill( always died), and a blunt hole saw. We ended up finishing that hole with a metal file, a steak and a hammer, haha. The second hole we got a stronger drill and it was easier, it looked like not too bad( for my first modd) but looked a lot better with the alien fan grills on top. Oh yeah and after I finished, my newegg stuff came in, and now I gots 1gig of ram in dual channel and a thermaltake pip101 cooler, woohoo! Can't wait for my lan :D

wait where can I upload my pics...

I think i saw that in indiana jones once. and actually to come to think of it that has happened in a bunch of movies. except instead of a logo it was like a map or inscription or something.

flecom has this list of uploaders.. you can ask him for it because i forgot the link... or ask someone in here... or look in the FAQs... or google for it which is what i always do, search "image uploader" or "image hosting" or anything of the like... theres another one i particularly liked i think it was image.cubix.com or something, not sure, sry

yeah I looked around for it and such and found image shack. Well here they are:

my.php

so what do you think for the fact I ended up using only a steak, a hammer, and a drill, and a file.

;) SChweet!

Good first mod!

Now that you have a holesaw, that plexi on the side is screamin for more fans!

actually I still don't have a holesaw yet, the one I had sucked and only knawed the paint off. I'll go get one though, then we'll see about those other side holes, hehe

....steak?

That's a new one on me. Modding with meat.

haha.

you dont need to make a 80mm hole for a 80mm fan, you can carve out a grill in the case itself. instead of making a 80mm hole then putting a grill on it, you can make either a series of holes, or rows of vents, (like a drill hole on either side of the fan, and cut from one hole to the other with a dremil cut off wheal) something like (i hope this lines up)

_______
(_______)
____________
(____________)
_______
(_______)

granted more vents than just the three will be needed but its an alternative.

I'm guessing you got a wood holesaw like the one that was linked in this thread. You want a bi-metal holesaw for this kind of work..

hahah, i tried using a wood holesaw i got cheap to try to cut a hole in my psu for an extra small fan... at first i couldnt drill thru so i used one of my steel bits to drill thru but it was small and i used that as a pilot hole for the holesaw drill bit to chew thru on... it went thru but dulled it so badly the edges felt round not sharp.... and the hole saw just chewed a ring of paint off and the teeth on the holesaw wore out.... what a waste of my precious time

yeah something like that, actually the blades on the one I had were crazy dull, I don't think it could cut through wood
