The Coffin Case

Okay, here is the concept...

I have a Dell Dimension 4300S case, aka "The coffin case". Aptly named, as its design is likely to sever a finger or two before this project is done. Nice aluminum chassis, rear hinge side panel, yadda yadda yadda.

All that proprietary stuff... gone.

My buddy wants a semi-full mod case for his computer store... and I obliged. He provides the {H}ardware, I provide the case. System Specs in a bit... wait for 'em.

I have to rebuild the entire backplane of the case... as the proprietary mobo mount system and PSU just don't work. Anyway, Chassis pretty much intact, painted a nice, deep midnight blue. Exterior, shelled in smoked 1/4" plexi, in the shape of a coffin. Complete with lit, cross-shaped power and reset button on the front fascia. Blowhole in the top, lighted LED fan, UV reactive cables, Stealthed drives, lighted feet (LEDs in clear plexi feet), 2 cold cathode tubes, air cooling. All lights to be blue, except the cross, which will be white. Should be interesting. The problem? I have 2 weeks.

System specs of the proposed rig... AMD A64 3400+, Gigabyte board, 1 GB 400 Dual Channel RAM, 2 100GB SATA HDDs, Dual Layer 16x DVD burner, NVidia 6800 Ultra VC. Yeah. oh bloody f*****g yeah.

The good part? I get to keep the system after Halloween. {H}ardware and all.

Pics coming... thinking about doing a worklog. What do ya'll think?

PS: Stripped all plastic from the case Tuesday night. Should be painting this weekend.

Isn't a coffin a little morbid for a store display :D

oh and PICS now :p

A little morbid? Yeah, just a little. No,hell, Halloween coming up... damn near perfect! :)

I see what I can do about pics.

Pics are up. At least, 2 of them, to show what I working with. System was originally a P4 1.5ghz machine w/ 256 SDRam (PC133). Crap.

Gl the interior sounds sexy, and if you pull it off right the mod sounds like a very cool idea. But to have to do it on a dell, well that blowz cause it would be much easier to pick up a beige, plain case without all the plastic and bullshit mounting shit inside.

Oh yeah. Big ol' honkin' plastic shroud for the CPU. Ugly, and has the added benefit of being completely uneffective. ;)

The new cooling system, initially, will be air, but will migrate to water as soon as possible. The rig will probably not under too much stress during the time it is in the shop, so I am not too worried about it for now. When it comes home, then it is a different story. Since it will end up at least mildly OC'ed, water is definately the way I need to go with it.

UPDATE:

Just found out the proc for this machine came in today, and is a CG stepping! Woot!

ROTFLMAO.

Beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous. I love it. But, unfortunately, that would never fit in the shop window. Now, my living room... hmmmm....

fall i can understand what you're doing but the actual coffin weirds me out a lil. seems a lil disrespectiful. but hey thats just me.

It's the computer of DEATH!

But back on topic I picked up one of those cases, and rebuilt my mom's pc into it, stabdard ATX mobo, no modifications necessary... perhaps a slightly different version?

I just had to dremel an opening for the monitor plug on the PSU, but that was it...

I guess if I got in a hurry I could get by with just cutting a new hole for the PSU plug, however, I am rebuilding the back plane not just for the PSU, but also for a serious push/pull cooling system. Twin 80s pulling in, 120mm on top pushing it out. At least that is what I am thinking right now. The back plane is up for discussion at this point.

Beyond a doubt, a stnd ATX will fit, cutouts and all. I just need to get the extra air in there, plus, it'll give me a place to put the res when water goes in.

Oooh OK I understand now... Actually now that I think about it and look at the pictures, I would have needed to modify it too, as there was no slot for an AGP card... since my mom's pc uses built-in graphics (she does not play anything more graphically intensive than Bookworm), it's fine.

Had some plans to mod that case too, but never got around to it, so it is basically stock... Had it stripped down ALL the way, took a while to find all the latches, and took a lot of self control to resist just ripping it all to pieces!!!

Wanted to replace the side logo plastic with a big fan, or carve the words HELL and make them glow...

Damn procrastination! :D

I recently rebuilt my roommates Dell computer (replaced mobo, case and OS) and have that very same case now sitting in my room. I thought about modding it, but was thinking of doing it with either a bottle of lighter fluid and a match, or with an Aluminum baseball bat....can't decide yet.

Luckily, I didn't have that self-control problem when I removed the plastic... I just ripped it off. Started out as being nice to it... then said screw it, and took out all my Dell angst. Plastic went everywhere. It was like Platoon... and I swear I heard "Adagio for Strings" playing in the background...

Tonight I hope to drill out the rivets, and prep for painting on Saturday. I'll post some pics of the disassembled pieces when I get there. I'll also post pics of the primer and paint I plan to use for the chassis.
