:confused: What do you guys suggest? I plan to make an upgrade, and have very little money to spend. So here are what my choices have become:

1) upgrade my proc and mobo to a A64 Newcastle + S754 NF3250 board BUT leave my vid card intact (FX5900XT 128MB)

OR

2) Upgrade my vid card only to either a 9800 Pro 256mb OR a AGP 6600GT

It might help to let you know what I'm currently running:

AXP 2400m @ 2.3GHz
1GB PC4000 memory
NF2 Ultra mobo
Aopen FX5900XT 128MB (stock speed)

I guess I would like to know if the video card upgrade to a 9800Pro is more of a lateral move vs. going to the AGP 6600GT....and even if the vid card upgrade is a lateral move period.

Or do you think going for the mobo + proc upgrade would be more beneficial despite it eing to a s754 + newcastle (would look into OCing obviously).

...Oh, and I do occasionally game: Farcry, BF1942, UT2K4, CoD, D3, and soon HL2
 
Yeah, between 200-250, but definitely closer to 200--bascially as little as possible. Also, i guess i meant a 128mb 9800 pro--not the 256mb version.
 
Ok..on newegg: looking at newcastle 2800+ RETAIL + EPoX NF3 250gb = $201 shipped;

Rosewill 9800PRO (in-stock eta 12/12) = $193 shipped;

Apollo 6600GT AGP = $234 shipped (actually in-stock!)

I'd do the A64 upgrade. It not only will help you in games, but on your desktop too. And the jump from a 5900XT to a 9800pro/6600gt isn't really that much of a jump. I wouldn't upgrade your video card until you can afford at least a 6800nu, or even better, a 6800GT.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I've heard that the Winchesters OC better. You said you wanted to OC, so you might as well get the proc that gets you the highest OC.

EDIT: If your overclocking, get an OEM precessor and use the money that you save for a higher quality heatsink.

Nope, my bad. You may want to shell out a few extra bucks and get a S939. The price difference is only like $20 right now, but I guess $20 is a lot to you. If you operate on this tight a budget, it would probably be better to shell out the extra money now, and save money later. Getting a S754 mobo now means you will have to get a S939 mobo next upgrade. However, getting a S939 mobo now means that you can save ~$150 on a mobo next upgrade.
 
They do overclock better... Why would you have to activate windows over the phone?
 
Well, if you activate every so often in a 60 or 90 day period, it makes you call and have to talk to a customer representative. They ask you if your OS is on more than one computer and why you had to reinstall windows. After tht they give you some 42-digit number you have to type in that they read to you over the phone--simply a pain when you have done it many times each year. I just had to do this last week because I got a new hdd after my old one went belly up. If you upgrade regularly, you probably have run into this.

Anyway, what S939 boards do you all recommend?? Have not researched them thoroughly?

Would you recommend the MSI K8T NEO2-F ($100) or the Abit AV8 ($111)--both are K8T800 Pro?

And what HSF would you rec for the Winchester 3000+??

tomorrow im upgrading to a athlon 64 setup and plan on using my windows xp cd from my athlon xp setup. will i need to call microsoft to activate it even though i havent activated in the last 90 days?
 
You shouldn't have to...because I had just re-installed windows about 2 months ago and had not done a reinstall for 8 months before that and NO problems. Just did the old activate over the internet. You should be okay
 
I would get the Vanilla Flavor 6800 like the BFG! Unlock the Pipes Using Riva Tuner and then turn up the clock. Trust me you wont go wrong with that solution. BTW I just upgraded from a 9800 Pro and it made a world of difference for me.
 
Good idea nightwing. You can sometimes find BFGtech 6800s at Best Buy for $250, and that's right up your price range. Unlock and overclock that bad boy!
 
Last time I had to reactivate Windoze, the customer support lady (if she knew what she was talking about) said you can activate it 2x over the net, then you are forced to call after that to prevent piracy and stuff like that. Waste of time and personell for MS if you ask me.
 
You guys really think the 6800nu would be the best upgrade....i.e. would I really benefit from it if my CPU and mobo are holding it back? Or would they be holding the system back at all? Appreciate the input. Saw that Compusa has the PNY 6800nu for $199 after rebates.
