The Best Gaming HeadSET

Stay away from Bose. As the previous poster pointed out, they have ok-ish sound, but definitely not for its price. The Triports themselves don't fare much better, they are on par with $20-30 headphones for 4X the price.

lol i paid 30bux for used, so they work well for the price. if im gonna pay money for good headfones im goin with sennheiser or shure

and as far as bose goes i think tri ports sound better then the quiet noise. but thats just me.

i did come across a set of bang olufsen earbuds. those sounded great also. they were given to me then someone stole them when they tried to steal my ipod

got the Koss sb49 yesterday and............... they sound like hell! ok-mediocre at best. :)none of the sharp highs of the ksc75 and just average headset bass- think icemat and plantronics audio370. the bass is not smooth but boomy. in a bass heavy game like bf2142 thay sound like crap. for dance music pretty good. the midrange and highs are just sloppy. worth the 22$ i paid but it did not make my headset dreams come true. i tried them with and w/o an amp
after about an hour i reached for my old senn hd525 for sonic bliss :p

as far as 'gaming' headsets go i rate these 2nd behind the steelsound 5hv2 and about on par with the plantronic audio370. better than the icemats.

Really? Boomy? Is your bass boost on? I use them and they sound like the AT A700s to me. Not at all bass heavy. Bass light if anything. They are tolerable sounding to me which is saying something lol. You can't deny the excellent build quality or warranty either.

Oh nm you got the 49. I have the 40. The inline volume controls mess with the sound.

i will bypass the volume control and see if that helps. it should not make much difference. but u never know

I agree that the bose are not worth their price tags, but they really aren't that bad. I have a pair that I got for 25 bucks from my friend and for the price I love them. Plus they are really comfy which is very important to me. If I were to buy headphones I would probably go with Audio Technica A-900 (if I had the money). If I didn't (which is the case) I would go with A700 just because I liked closed headphones.

Sorry you don't like them. I have been happy with mine. For the $$ they are great. The microphone is really well done too. I can watch tv pretty loud and it does not pick that up so the noise canceling works.

Best gaming headset, I don't know. Best headset for gaming, there are a few. But it also depends on your sound card and if they go well together.

I used to have a pair of gaming headphones by Plantroniks, model 510. They were OK, but they didn't block out sound (neighbors having sex or something) and the mic was kind of crappy. I also had onboard sound, which I don't think mattered because those headphones were USB and used its own drivers.

I then upgraded because I wasn't hearing people clear enough and not able to pin point their exact location, which is very important playing FPS for CAL and CEVO... the occasional pubbing is not important to me, I just blast some music.

I bought the X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card (around $90 now, $120 when I first bought them), and the Sennheiser HD555 headphones (got a crazy deal on these badboys, they range from $170 to $100 brand new, depending on where you get them). They don't come with a microphone, but that doesn't matter. You're not going to be singing like a fairy (I think) so just order this Zalman High-End microphone and use electrical tape or just clip it on to attach it to the cord of your headphones. It's actually better as some microphones that come pre-attached to headphones tend to interfere with sound when using it. http://www.xoxide.com/zmmic1.html

With this soundcard, headphones, and mic, I'm literally unstoppable. I even pinpoint enemies for my teammates because they don't hear what I do most of the time.

Anyway, good luck.

P.S The Sennheiser PC series suck. They don't cover your entire ear and they don't provide better performance than the 5 series Sennheisers. They're ugly too. You'll probably be made fun of at a LAN.

I just got a steelsound 5hv2, I'm disappointed in them, I'll most likely take them back. My main gripe is the mic, which is kinda the reason I was getting a headset in the first place. It's either just not good enough to pick me up well, or it's too short and it'd do better if it was in front of my mouth. Either way, it's going to go back and I'll stick with something I accidentally rigged up over the weekend while fiddling around. I've got some Senn 535s I've been using, and tried both a USB desk mic and that zalman clip on, but didn't like the results. Well I had forgotten I'd gotten this add-in logitech headset with mic when I got a webcam last year. It's a behind the head type with thin speakers. So it works well enough if I flip it upside down around my neck, the mic on it sticks up next to my mouth, heh. Kinda ghetto to have 2 cords hangin off me, but it's cheap and it works. :)

i have the 5hv2 and love it- no problems with the mic at all. i think there must be a problem with the settings or a defective mic

I'll do a more thorough test in case it's my x-fi for some reason, but I doubt it if the mic on the other headset sounds fine.

In case someone is so inclined to play with a 5.1 headset, Fry's has the Turtle Beach HPA2 on sale for $69 this weekend.

I picked one up to screw with, wasn't that impressed with the one other 5.1 I tried, but then I also probably didn't spend enough time tweaking things.

if u lan a lot u definately need a headset if u plan on talking- a clip on or desk mic would pick up too much outside noise. if u game at home lonely in the dark i guess it doesnt matter...

also try not to mix usb mics with other sound sources- such as pci sound cards. some games that have voice comms built in cant handle it well if u use teamspeak also -such as bf2 and 2142

p.s. i looked on newegg and most of the mics were omnidirectional (all but one)

I don't understand why a desktop mic would pic up MORE ambient sound than a mic attached to a headset would? What's the reasoning behind that?

I'm pretty happy with the HPA2 so far, sounds pretty good, got some good sub-rumble when I was playing TF2, having the cord on the left side works out well, the cord is out of my way as opposed to using my Senn 535s with the wires going to each side. The only thing I have to watch is the mic, the connection seems to be so-so, though today it was ok. That's the drawback to a removeable mic, it's not as reliable.

most headset mics are unidirectional- they only pick up sound from one direction and point toward your mouth. most desktop and clip on mics are omnidirectional and pick up anything audible

Ok the Koss SB 45 is the silver and the 40 is black. I find them, as do my teammates, to be INSANELY good at hearing movement and footsteps in COD4. For music they are only ok. The bass is controlled and tight but nothing really impactful b/c the sounds which you need to hear would be clouded by the bass.

Just try a pair with the X-FI on CS:S or Cod4 and I promise that they do their job well for under $35. The mic is quite good too.

Bumping old thread. Looking at the SB 40 and 45, which do you think have a more comfortable ear cup design? I like the look of the SB40, but I want it to fit over the ear.

Dude I am 6'3" and the SB40 is comfy. No problems there. In fact, the Koss has really become decent for music now that it has burned in a bit.

lol
