You know something is seriously wrong when one of the top 10 cell phone programs on the market today (in Japan) is designed to ward off “gropers”.

"Anti-Groping Appli" by games developer Takahashi was released in late 2005, but has only recently climbed up popularity rankings, reaching No. 7 in this week's top-10 cell phone applications list compiled by Web-based publisher Spicy Soft Corp.

The application ... is for women who want to scare away perverts with minimum hassle and without attracting attention.

Fuck that. Point him out. Scream at him. Make other passengers beat the shit out of him. Last time he gropes anyone.
 
I agree, screw the phone message, just start yelling "help, this guy is sexually assulting me". That is more likely to solve the problem than a message on the phone.

There must be some aggressive gropers in Japan.
 
Unfortunately screaming in Japan will not work as this problem is very widespread there. They still practice marrying off daughters to rich and older men as well.

The girl that screams risk getting ignored by the surrounding people and beat up when the groper has a chance to be alone with her.

Sadly, alot of oriental and Japanese cultures still employ dominant males and submissive females.

I never said it was. I agree with everyone else that cellphone isn't going to work, and in addition, screaming isn't going to work either.
 
On a recent trip to Japan, we saw subway cars that were female only. There were also waiting lines for trains that were designated female only. So I guess it is a big problem especially during rush hours. Even though this app seems like a roundabout method, it can't hurt to have this application on the phones.
 
Japanese are fucked. There are so many weird reality porn videos from there... groping included and its not the worst, there are some in which a dude runs up to a girl, literally ejaculates on her, and runs away...

I think mandatory castration for idiots would be more effective.
 
Biggest culture shock in my life for sure, seeing this happen. Even bigger shock at the result of trying to intervene. Horrified woman, several irrate business men, a flustered tourist, quite the scene. I'm 6'4" btw, security footage would prolly be pretty funny.

Took a few minute to convince the patrol man or whatever that I was trying to help and wasn't the one grabbing ass.

His advice, "Mind your own business."

Wacky.
 
Makes me want to take up Taser donations for all women in Japan.
 
All they need is the right to bear arms and some of our Texas laws.

I'd hate for a groper to try and mess with my female friend who just moved there. She's knocked out friends of hers she's made over there under her own roof. I doubt she has a problem taking out a groper's teeth, AND his scrotum.
 
Its sad, this activity (especially sharking) is mentally traumatizing to a woman and has long term effects.

If a woman is so shy she cannot speak words and needs a phone to say it for her, would she have the courage to use any self defense device?

I feel the problem lies in policing. Just MHO but if you have good cops who care about local issues, this is easily prevented.

My solution, undercover police and a young schoolgirl 'actress/bait'.

The police are probably contributers to the problem. And the sad part is that the value of woman vs men still isn't there as like we have it today.
 
That's not going to stop anything. Think of the police to civilian ratio. They can't control groping. It happens in an instant. An officer can't prevent it. All they can do, really, is instill fear and hope people won't do it.

Sad thing is, once you grope a girl, the experience can't be taken away. Jailed or not, you groped her. Harsh penalties would maybe help deter gropers from following through, but you've got huge crowds of people.

I suppose undercover officers could help nab gropers, but that won't do much for gropers-to-be.
 
Well, as long as poking people with a boner isnt against the law im good :D

I dont know why people think america is so much better. Ya in japan you get your butt nudged by a hand of an old man, in NYC you get stabbed or jumped for your damn ipod by a group of gang members. Our subway system is nothing to brag about, theres no sexual harrassment, just violent crime.

Japan needs security on the trains (Im sure some do already but obviously its not enough), NYC has a lot of undercover police on trains since the robbings got so bad, but I think uniformed security would be enough to scare off most groping by socially inept pervs who fear any kind of confrontation.
 
I'm learning to speak Japanese and one of the stranger things I've come across is that some thing are acceptable for females to say, but unnacceptable for males, and vice versa. Their culture is indeed very different for sure.

Assholes needs to be dealt with anywhere. This article talks about Japan, so we're all talking about Japan. Don't get your panties in a wad accusing us of superiority thinking.

because the crime is unacceptable here, but the deviancy and pervertedness is completely acceptable there.

you don't realize something: This ISN'T AGAINST THE LAW there.
