Temps way too high

I have a Tuniq Tower, Antec 900, and a q6600 B3. Temps at stock are 40 idle, 45 with light use, and 59 when running prime 95. A slight overclock to 2.6 brings the load temp all the way up to 65. I've already tried reseating it, didn't help temps at all. The heatsink actually seems pretty flat to me, should I take the effort to lap it? Maybe a totally different method of applying thermal paste? (I've tried the thin line arctic silver's instructions recommend but had a hard time getting it right, and tried the grain of rice method) I was hoping to overclock to 3.0, but with temps like this no way, lol.

Try taking the side of your case off and see if that doesn't drop temps by 5-10C. If temps drop even more then that you might want to look into better case cooling.

Since you have a B3 its going to be inherently hotter then the G0 so you'll have to factor that into your cooling equation. I haven't tried to lap my cpu and heatsink but if you have the patience and the means to replace the CPU should something go horribly wrong I would say go for it.

Thanks for the reply. Temps are identical with side on or off. The antec 900 has excellent ventilation, 2 120mm intakes in the front, one 120mm exhaust in top/back, and one 200mm exhaust on top. Temps in case seem fine except for the processor. I know B3s are hotter than g0s, but is this level of heat with great air circulation and a tuniq tower really normal? It runs hotter at 2.6 than my friend's b3 does at 3.0, and he has a 20$ cooler and the same case. Also, it should be mentioned I'm a horrible klutz and couldn't really afford to replace the cpu if I screwed up the lapping.

Another then making sure the CPU Smart Fan Control is turned off and your CPU fan is running at 100% speed I would suggest lowering your voltage little by little while Prime testing for stability.

A possibility for your friend running cooler might be you have a higher ambient room temperature?

All my fans are set to always run at maximum. It's possible it's just hotter here than at his house, but we have air conditioning running, and it just seems like with one of the coolest cases and heatsinks on the market the processor running near its maximum heat capacity is a bit odd.

My B3 runs hot too. But I have mine @ 3.0ghz.

Processor is @ 3.0ghz
Idle:
Core 0: 43c
Core 1: 39c
Core 2: 37c
Core 3: 39c

Load via Prime95 after approximately 30mins
Core 0: 59c
Core 1: 57c
Core 2: 54c
Core 3: 55c

I'm using a Zalman9700NT, same case, and I'm still messing around with various things trying to get it more stable... I'm still have trouble with the damn Vista underclocking it when the processor is idle, lol.

Thats not Vista but rather your motherboard thats doing it. Disable that via bios.

Charger you need to turn off your temp control in bios. There are a few settings that do different things. Look for it and you will find it. 65C for an overclocked B3 Quad doesnt seem overally bad to me as we have seen them run hot already.

Yeah, my P6N-Platinum has all the settings turned off (I've also consulted the [H] thread about this particular mobo) and it still does as it wants. Dunno why.

Sorry for the threadjack! :D

Heck if its stable I wouldnt worry about it. You dont need all that power at idle and it will just run cooler. Some of us run into stability problems is why we disable all temp controls. Ive been jackin threads all day too lol. Sorry catchascatchcan!
