Temps in a SFF?

This is a generic question, and if it does not belong here then I apologize in advance and if some mod could move it to the right forum that would be appreciated. I am fairly new to SFF and DIY systems in general and I had a question about temperatures.

First, what application is commonly used to test temps? Currently I am using SIW. Is there something better?

Second, what is considered "good" as far as temperatures are concerned? Also, what temp is usually important? The core temp or the other temps?

I think that is all for now. Any light shed on my questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
 
You mean off the motherboard? There a lot that do it...Speedfan is one. Doesn't really matter.

What is good depends on the processor.
 
Greeve: give us a list of your system spec's ( and if you are running at stock speed or OC'ed ). That would give us a good starting point to what your target temps should be.

I use "PC Probe II" by Asus that came with my mobo.
 
I'm running the following all stock and no OC:

SG05 + stock PSU
Blu Ray
1T HD (Samsung SPinpoint F3)
DFIs ITX Mobo
Radeon HD 5770
i7 860
4G RAM

Right now iddle my temps are the following:
TMPIN0 - 43C
TMPIN1 - 38C
TMPIN2 - 29C

Core temps:
Core0 - 38C
Core1 - 37C
Core2 - 40C
Core3 - 33C

GPU Core Temps - 40C

HD Temp - 32C
 
DFI p55 and 860 @ 3ghz with h50: 45c, 43c, 44c, 44c. Gtx 285 is at 58c with Arctic-Cooler heatsink. PSU is Shuttle 500w. I think the results are pretty similar to a tower case or sightly lower.

I have the same board, a core i5-750 (stock cooler), GTS 250, 2.5" HDD etc. in the SG05 and my temperatures are pretty much same as yours.
 
Can be hugely dependent on airflow.

The only fan in my system (besides the 5850) is a 1200RPM 92mm exhaust fan, because I prize silence. Even undervolted to 0.99v my Q9550 hits 56'C load, and idles in the mid-40's. And my "motherboard" temp (likely the G45 northbridge) gets to about 70'C under load. The 5850 hogs a lot of air from the vented sides, so it idles at 40 and loads to the mid-60s. Of course the free air available in the system is about the size of my fist and with no intake fans I'm not really concerned at all.

With a 120mm intake fan your temps look about right.

70C Northbridge sounds way too high. Don't want that above 45 or so.

G45 is rated for 103'C before it starts throttling. I know it's fine because the stock HSF idles more than 50'C. :p And I've used two of these exact units, so it wasn't an isolated case. Hell, I ran it up to 84'C on load with IBT when testing my max FSB (mid 400's).

Stability is rock solid anyway.
