Temp shutdowns...but why?

My PC shuts itself down due to "thermal events" when I try to run modern games. However, the temperatures as monitored by several different programs do not reflect this necessity. CPU core temps max out around 55c, GPU core temp maxes out around 65c. This should not be a problem. Thermal paste is good, air circulation is good, drivers are up to date, bios is up to date...anyone have any idea why it would be shutting down like this?

what makes you say it's a "thermal event"? Random shutdowns during gaming sounds like my previous inadequate PSU problem.
 
I get the message that there was a "thermal event," presumably from BIOS, during startup. Could it be the PSU? That doesn't sound right...I have a 450w no-name PSU.
 
Crappy PSU can be the cause of a lot of problems.

Folks will always point to that first for whatever problem you could be having.

Additionally, your mobo could be overheating as well.
 
There could very well be a temp sensor located else where on the mobo. There is usually one embedded in the north bridge, and that could trigger a thermal event. There could also be dust (most people dont know dust can conduct electricity) shorting any number of trace pads, if the bios sees a dead short across a trace that controls a thermo sensor, it would create this event.

And as has been said a shitty psu could also be the cause... it might say thermo event, but it could be from a brief lax in clean power to any number of components causing it to be read and or interpreted wrong... if its an OEM system (hp/dell etc.) it may have a thermal sensor in the PSU that could be triggering as well...

This is a system I have built, but I never really dusted the motherboard per se. I will try that next. Whatever the problem is, it is getting slightly worse every day. I would rather not replace anything (else) needlessly.
 
Could it be there's a setting in your motherboard's bios that will shutdown the computer if the CPU temperature gets above 55C? I've seen similar settings before.

Are you monitoring the temperature of every sensor on the computer? Motherboard, VRM sensors, Hard Drive Sensors etc? Since it's clearly not your GPU or CPU (at least shouldn't be), don't rule out other components however unlikely.
 
The motherboard is tripping due to CPU temp, but the core temps never go above 60c and rarely go above 55. I am monitoring the temps with 3 different programs and the logs do not show any pattern. I cleaned the motherboard and PSU thoroughly to no avail.
 
Reset your bios to defaults and uninstall any monitoring apps you have. I bet something just has a thermal limit set way too low.

Had a pc at my work that had this problem, the cause was bad caps on the mobo.
 
It wouldn't be a bad idea to try out another mobo and see if that is the cause.
 
I checked every capacitor carefully but see no signs of bulging or leakage. Once I replace the board I will give a thorough inspection and an update. I would rather fix the problem than know what it is, but of course both would be nice...
 
New PSU did not fix the problem, but made it take longer to happen. The only components left from when this started are the CPU, RAM, and case. Stats from a stress test that caused a shutdown after approximately 80 minutes. Could it be the CPU? I'm at a loss at this point.

The problem has been solved: It turns out the new PSU is actually stopping the shutdowns. I took the old PSU apart and not only was it disgustingly dirty and dusty, but there was a bulging capacitor in there as well. Why this was reported as a thermal issue I may never know, but the PSU was the problem.
 
This is why dirty power and cheap psu's are bad. Bad power=noise. Noise = bad data... in your case it showed as thermal over temp. For others, it blasts the sata lines and damages data, fries hdds. Still others, it won't show up at all. Then one day bam, catastrophic melt down... with any luck, maybe even fire.

Not trying to say your old psu was cheap... it might not have been. But this is why a lot of time we suspect, and reccomend replaceing the psu first
