Okay, so I'd really like my Aquaero to measure the core temps from the CPU and control fan speeds based on that temp but I can't figure out how to connect this thermal probe, any suggestions?

It's an Athlon 64 on a Asus A8N32 board.

I know enough to not try to sandwich it between the block and the heatspreader but now I'm at a loss. I'm used to the Barton/Sempron naked chip where I'd just thermal paste it right next to the core but now I can't find a decent option.

With the number of people using aftermarket temperature sensors and fan controllers why don't motherboard manufacturers make a temperature sensor header connected to the thermal probe mounted under the core?

I remember someone mounting a probe under the connector (think it was on a Socket A) a while back, is that still at all possible on a 939?
 
they are innaccurate anyway...I suggest you just stick it somewhere and give up :cool:
 
Trim as much of the excess insulater as you can from around the thermal bead (I mean the yellow plastic on a thin micro probe) and thermal epoxy it to the side of the IHS. It's not as accurate as attaching it so that the bead touches the side of the core but it should be within 5C of the core temp and that's the best you can hope for.
 
Not possible to mount it underneath on socket 939 anymore.

You could take your CPU to a machinist and put a groove into the IHS like the Intel TTV. That would provide the best possible placement if you want the most accurate readings.

Thanks for the suggestions, milling a groove into the IHS seems like a lot of work and I wouldn't trust most machine shops to be able to handle it.

I just thermal pasted it to the side of the heat spreader and will watch the temps from the probe compared to the temps reported by MBM. If I can figure out a correction factor (-5 degrees always, etc) I'll just program the Aquaero to account for that factor.

I think you would be better to run your fans off the water temps. However, you might consider drilling a hole into your waterblock and cram a NTC sensor in there. If you have a modern block with a .030-.050 bottom thickness you can probably forget the idea though.

It's an Innova XX-Flow.

I'm setting the fan speeds to run off the combined ratio of the water temps and the CPU temp... aint that Aquaero cool, imagine controlling one fan using two temperature sensors... gotta love that German stuff.
