Temp Measurement: Tools?

I have an MSI mobo that came with a software package called "Corecenter" that runs under windows and reports (among other things) my CPU and case temperatures.
My question is >> Is there any concensus on how accurate this tool is? I question it as I have a modest WC setup installed, and the Corecenter tool reports I never go above 40C (I have also run "Hot CPU Tester" utility and it also cannot get the temp past 40C). It also reports that my case temp never goes above 62F which cannot be correct as the room temp is 70F.
What do you use to measure your system temps?

I prefer SpeedFan which, despite its name, does a great job of reading your onboard mobo temps and info...
 
What board is it. If it happens to be a NEO s754 then most likely its reporting the wrong temp as they have issues with that.
 
Trying to get accurate temp readings with onboard sensors is like trying to kiss your elbow, you might get close but it's never quite "there".
 
the same can be said of getting temps with calibrated RTDs and Thermocouples as well :p

while on die measurment has its drawbacks so does calibrated sensors that arent on the die itself

I also think I have figured out the case temp discrepancy. I suspect that the sensor is being blown on hard from one of the case fans (I have 3 panaflows that blow across the motherboard. It is a cube server case so this is possible). the thing I need to check is whether Thermistors are subject to 'wind chill' effects.

Temp diodes are't suseptable to windchill effect nor are they able to read temps as we would feel them due to relative humidity. The only way you'll cool a temp diode bellow ambient is to dip it in a liquid then place it in an air stream.

Although this is the Water Cooling sub forum I really hope the water isn't running free in your PC ;)
 
Your on-board temp reporting software is useful only for relative comparisons on your machine.
Take temps.
Make a change.
Take temps again.
Better or worse?
That's the extent of the utility/trustworthiness of the mobo sensors.

If you'r really like to shrivel your e-dick (or maybe add a few inches if you're lucky), compare your temps to someone else who is also relying on software sensor readings.

It should be an Olympic sport...

Thanks. You just saved me probably hours of research. I must conclude that my Mobo just THINKS it's way cool. :cool: But it's not really!

2. we are talking miniscule currents here, EMI plays a large role, as would the integrity of the circuit itself
3. the quality and repeatability of the sensor to its assigned value (see 1)
