ok i just installed the zalman 9500 on my new rig (sig) and bios says that the temps are(dfi ultra d) low 30s c but smart guardian says differenty (what about the system temp.... is that ok?)

Opty's don't run ridiculously cool...but if that's your idle temp then something might be wrong. I'd still be more inclined to place more faith in what the BIOS is saying...but there's no way to get true idle and load temps from the BIOS.

Try Speedfan and MBM to see if you can get something else working...'cus I've seen incorrect/scewed results being reported for DFI nF4 Lanparty boards before.

yeah, its idle and ive seen screwy dfi temps also...

ill try em out. BTW, is that "system" (i assume chipset?) temp ok?

I'm honestly not THAT familiar with Smart Gaurdian...but I think it's referencing your chipset temp...and that is a little high. When I had my Ultra-D I had it sitting around 50C or so...never any higher, and usually in the mid-high 40's. I removed the cooler, cleaned it off along with the chipset, and applied a thin layer of AS5 before I ever really checked temps though, did it right out of the box...so I'd recommend the same thing.

speedfan says the same thing...

BIOS says that the chipset is 44c...

EDIT: i just restarted my computer and speedfan reads this

temp 1: 30c (previously 70c...now with check?)
temp2: 40c
temp 3: 46c (with a check)

smartguardian still reads the same thing as 70c before and the 46c cpu temp

EDIT 2: now speedfan is @ 70c lol

Weird man, I dunno what to say...I'd still be more inclined to go by the BIOS reading for CPU temps and whatnot...see if you can record the different temps that're registering in the BIOS and match them up as best you can in windows...because it's probly just a case of the sensors being screwy when its coming to the software.

i can hear the zalman going 100% all the time... i guess ill retry seating it.

Could help, I guess I was assuming that that might not be the case.

Let us know how it goes...double check the base of the Zalman for a full imprint of thermal compound first off and then try re-seating.

alright ill check to see if theres air. (probably the case because it was my first time doing it)

how thin should the as5 be? almost transparent?

The AS5 should be fairly thin...too much compound will negatively impact your temperatures too...so watch for that. There should be enough AS5 on the base of the cooler to leave an imprint, but not so much that it's thick upon removal.

i just reseated using the "let the hs weight spread it out meathod" and its the same result.

So you've already re-seated the cooler then?

If you've re-seated it using the above method and the temps are still showing the same then hmm...interesting. What is the BIOS actually reporting for a CPU temp? As long as the BIOS cpu temp isn't skyrocketing you're not in any danger, it'd just be more of a mistery as to why every piece of software you use is reporting different temps.

sorry, the cpu. I just turned off the chipset fan for a couple secs thats the "panel"...

I just have the 0610 stepping so i want to get to ocing but i cant with these temps...

That "panel" temp does make more sense to be the chipset temp...but what is your BIOS reporting for CPU temperature?

EDIT: Sorry...just beat you by a little bit there man.

If your cpu temp is 28-30c in the BIOS you're not in any danger at all when it comes to temperatures if you want to start overclocking. If you were to ignore what the software is telling you you could still start to OC and just check the BIOS temps before/after some stability testing, as the BIOS actually holds your cpu at 50% or so load.

Check out dfi-street.com to see if you can find out why the temps are being reported wrong in the software...but if you go by your BIOS temps you're fine...start OC'in man...your temps are fine.

lol same minute post

bios is reporting

CPU> 28-30c
PWM AREA> 35c
Chipset> 41c

also remember that the dfi ultra ds have some problems with their sensors i think...alittle low

The sensors do report a little low...but going by those temps you're still fine. Check the BIOS every once and awhile and see if your temps are in check...but I don't think you're in danger at all.

so i can start ocing?

THat 70c is just staring inmy face making me paranoid lol

whats "alittle" low?

The BIOS is what you would go by in this case...ignore the 70C and checkout DFI-Street to see if you can find a resolution to the improper readings.

You're good to go to start OC'ing, but it wouldn't hurt to get the software issue resolved first, because there's no way to check your actual load temps in the BIOS when testing for stability and whatnot.

"A little low" would be maybe a few degrees...it won't be dead on...but at the same time, there shouldn't be more then a <5c variance the majority of the time.

download smart gaurdian directly from the DFI downloads page, not a google search results site. Theres different versions for each chipset and I think u downloaded the wrong version.

it looks like u downloaded a version for the SIS chipset

Good call...when I installed smart gaurdian with my Ultra-D I think it was actually on one of my cd's that came with the mobo...give either of those a shot and hopefully things work out for ya.

will do... Well, before i read your post i took the advice of someone else and uninstalled speedfan and smartg and only left everest because it is sopposedly the most accurate and doesnt read 70c without the other apps being open.

Ill do as you say about the dfi dl page after i finisha pass of memtest @ 280mhz :D (how long does it take to finish a pass?)

Memtest can take awhile man, but I've never timed it, sorry.

I've seen other cases where having multiple monitoring apps open will screw up the results...so hopefully after you get a proper version of smart gaurdian installed things will be all good to go.

i usually jus let it run test5, 4 passes and its good but thats just me..
after that i combine my cpu OC and the ram OC and just run dual 32mb prime for a final stability test.

I've been doing that for about 2 years now

you guys are pros...

I installed the version off of the disk and its 30c :D

No problem man, I'll say...I had seen enough software monitoring issues with these boards that it's just the first thing I tried with my board...nice to know I/we could help. :)

with your help, im at 275mhz @ 3438 and 2750mhz @ stock voltage :D

Are you saying that your Opty is at 3.4GHz or am I reading that wrong?

Nice to know I could help...nothing better than seeing others accomplish what they want after taking your advise.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for ya.

EDIT: Might wanna check this out also if you wanna have a quick reference to some voltage options with your board: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1050565

woops, i meant the timings lol!

I wish the 3.4 ghz

Yeah, that does make more sense now that I look at it again...hyphon's are your friend man. :p

Nice stuff on the OC so far, glad to hear I helped.
