recently built myself a 3.4 ghz p4 w/hyperthreading, 800mhzfsb, 1mb L2 cahce, d915pbl motherboard, 1gb5300ddr2, with a radeon x700 pro (pci express). i just went into my bios settings and the cpu is running at 95degrees c (over 200degrees f) the system is running around 39-40. the case has 6 fans in it, wth is going on here?!

bad cpu/heatsink contact me thinks. Put some nice paste between the CPU/Heatsink that pad on the heatsink sucks butt.

That wouldnt explain why the case is 40C. My guess is a bad thermal sensor.

Actually you're thermal readings could simply be off. I have the same motherboard and I was getting temps alot higher than that. Obviously my system wouldn't really have booted if my processor were really at 500 degrees now would it?

I tried BIOS updates, reseating the CPU cooler and just about everything else. Then I realized that I was using a legacy ATX PSU. I upgraded to a Antec NeoPower 480Watt PSU and my problems went away instantly.

Your probably having a similar issue. My thermal readings were way off. Processor was at 500F and thermal zones 1 and 2 were reading over 300F each. I thought bad thermal sensors at first.

Now I think that the problem is that the D915PBL has problems with non-ATX 2.0 compliant PSU's. Which is what most people are using.

Prescotts will throttle at around 70-75c. I know this for a fact because I have seen it first hand. Case fans will not help much because your heatsink is not able to get rid of the heat fast enough. I do not really know how to help other than check the heatsink/cpu connection or thermal paste carefully.

Last ditch would be a new cpu cooler, use something very good like a Zalman flower or a Thermaltake Heatpipe. Prescotts get VERY hot.

thanks for the advice, i really appreciate it. im not getting anything crazy like 500degrees f. and i dont have a thermal sensor as far as i know, other then what my bios uses to gauge temps. these results were in my bios. also my ps is 420watt, its got an intake fan and all that nice stuff so im pretty sure im meeting the reqs here. im going to check the cpu/heatsink connection, if that doesnt work i may try another heatsink, but dont those kind of mods void teh warranty? i think i may have to contact intel as it is to have my processor replaced bc im sure running it semifrequently for the two weeks i did, cost me some serious cpu lifetime.

My temps supposedly idle at around 55C with 35-40C case temps on a 2.4 @ 3.4 on stock volts and a Zalman 7000 AL-CU. Unless your system is unstable, I wouldn't pay much attention to motherboard sensors.
