Hello all,

I'm going from America to Germany for a 9 months and want to bring my custom built rig with me. (The one in my sig)

Since they have the European power outlets there...220V, I'm curious as to what the best method of running my rig is. What power converter/transformer do you guys recommend?

Also if I get any additional components over there, will they be compatable? Graphics card etc..?

Thanks for the info. :)

Just replace your mains power cable with the right outlet plug. The PSU will handle 230V just fine.

+1

The powersupply will either have a switch on the back to switch to that voltage or it will do it automatically.

Yep. (Modern PSUs no longer need the switch tho. They autosense the input voltage). And as for the computers internal components, there's no difference from what we use here in Europe and what you use in the US. Just buy, plug in and go.

The 850W Toughpower you're using is a full-range PSU, so it will work fine in European outlets. All you need is a Europe power cable or a socket adapter. And any computer hardware you purchase there will work fine in your PC, since all of that is standardized.

For only 9 months. Is there any reason why you can't get a cheap laptop to use while you are there? It is a huge hassle to bring your whole box. I imagine for nine months that would be the school year? If it is DO NOT bring anything other than a laptop unless you want to waste your time locked up, not partying, not learning the language, not meeting the girls. A laptop also only need a $2 travel plug to change the USA style plug to the German style. As with a desktop, they are build for an international market so the take electricity from anywhere whether 110 or 220.

Great! Thanks for the quick replies everyone!

The laptop idea is probably not a bad idea, however Im cutting it real close with my money to stay 9 months. Know any good deals floating around out there?

If nothing else though, I will have a really good computer to do just about anything i want for next to no money. (just the cost of the cord/adapter)

True, but how are you going to get it there? and the monitor?

My plan is to have Fed-Ex wrap the monitor really well with bubble wrap in a box, meet carry on dimensions and weight limits and use as a carry on.

I will then gut the chassis and individually wrap the components and put in one of my 2 luggage bags that go under the plane. Seems like the best idea. :)

Yeah that could work but just be prepared to open anything up for inspection as you go through the airport terminal. If you are carrying a cardboard box with tons of tape and electronics inside, my guess is that it will get inspected.

I've sent towers in check-in luggage before and it went fine other than a dent in a side panel one time.

Yep, I always gutted my desktop and put it in my carry-on, I always got stopped, but they just did a quick swab check and sent me on my way. You will get a bunch of weird looks, however.

Haha...yeah, I'm looking forward to the weird looks. :D
