I have a machine witht the following:

Motherboard: Intel 815ET Pro v.5.0
CPU: PIII EB 1.0Ghz (133 fsb)
Memory: 256MB PC133
Video: ATI 3D Rage IIC AGP
HDD: 30GB
NIC: Intel Pro/100 S
OS: Windows 2000 Pro w/ SP4 and all the latest patches

When I select the shutdown option in windows, the machine goes through its process and stays at at screen with

Windows 2000 Professional
It is now safe to turn off your computer.

Then I have to hold down the power button for 6 seconds before it shuts completely off.

Is there a way I can have windows shutdown the machine on its own?

Or is there a way I can set the machine to turn off instantly when I hit the power button?

Thanks in advance.

Q. Ever since I upgraded to Windows 98 Second Edition, I've had occasional problems with shutting down my computer. I'll get to the screen that says "Windows is shutting down," and that's it. I don't see "It is now safe to turn off your computer." What is causing this?

A. There can be many causes for this -- it's one of the more difficult Windows problems to troubleshoot. But the fact that it began when you started using Windows 98 offers something of a clue.

Windows 98 has a feature called Fast Shutdown, which in theory is a great idea. Rather than closing out each active driver and program first, Windows just shuts down, period. This is supposed to shorten the shutdown process.

The only problem is that some software rejects this "brute force" approach and can cause a system to hang. Fortunately, you can turn off Fast Shutdown in Windows 98 Second Edition.

Go to Start, then Programs, Accessories, System Tools. In that folder, click on the System Information icon. This brings up the SysInfo program, which is an excellent diagnostic tool. Click on the Tools menu, then System Configuration Utility. Click on the Advanced button, and check the "Disable Fast Shutdown" box. Click OK and exit the utility and the SysInfo tool.

If something else is causing your problem -- or if you still use Windows 95 or the initial release of Windows 98 -- there are some other things you can try.

First, make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and sound card, your modem and, if you have one in your PC, your network card. Next, get down to as lean and mean a system as you can. Read the older column referenced in the second question in this FAQ to learn how to turn off background programs.

Finally, Microsoft has issued a patch for shutdown issues in Windows 98. You can get it, as well as read more troubleshooting tips, at support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q238/0/96.asp in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
