System turns itself on?

Alright, I've got a weird question and I'm sure the answer is right in front of me. Sometimes when I turn my system off (for bed, or peace and quiet, or whatever), it will turn itself on after a seemingly random amount of time. Would this be a software/hardware issue, or possible a flaky power issue (I doubt this, as it does it in my dorm, but also our house which is new -- so the electrical system should be solid)? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hrm, this must be a bios thing surely. No software could do that certainly. Anyway, there are two related bios settings that I know of. The first one is that it can actually be set to turn on at a specific time, but you say random intervals, so I wonder. It would have to be at the same time every day if it did that unless some sort of bug got into the system and either was triggering that part of the system when it shouldn't or maybe messing with the time. The other setting I can think of that's vaguely related is, I think in the power settings, where you can set the default state of the PC on power loss (which means that if you set it to off, then when your power blinks your PC stays off, if you set it to on, your pc will turn back on after the power blinks.) I recommend this be turned off in any pc that isn't a server as power blinking a certain way can make it go on and off which is bad for all the moving parts (especially the HD, I've killed one this way, it no longer turns on.)

Try unplugging your ethernet connection for a day or so and see if it happens as well. A friend of mine was at school and for whatever reason, the campus techs were trying to multicast ghost or something like that and his network card was picking it up as a Wake on LAN signal and would turn on. I can't remember what he ended up doing to fix it ultimately, but that was the problem.

Bingo -- this is related to the problem. I was messing with my system for another reason, and when I plugged my ethernet back in the system turned on within a few seconds. Anyone know a remedy?

Well first off, did you try turning off the wake on lan in the bios? Also, try changing your ethernet cable... Most of the time, it's the simple things that fix it.

Yeah their should be a setting in your bios that allows you to "Wake on LAN" simply just turn that setting off.
