Whenever I turn on my external drive and try to do any activity the pc would freeze. I noticed this a few days ago when trying to move files from one of my other internal drives to this external.
The external is a Western Digital 250gb laptop drive housed in a 2.5 external enclosure. I tried to reformat and about 10 minutes into the pc would freeze, activity light would go from flashing red/green to just green, ctrl alt del would not work and I have to resort to pushing the reset button. I also tried chkdsk, defrag with no such luck.

Any ideas?

is it making any noises? is the drive old? have you dropped or physically bumped the drive?

I'm assuming the drive is empty since you haven't been able to add anything to it, then have you tried using it w/ another pc/laptop and see if you could transfer a file that way to test it?

the drive is brand new WD 250gb laptop drive that released not too long ago. It's extremely quiet so no clicking noises that I hear but i can tell that it is running by placing my hand on it.
I brought it up to work but ALLof the locations are taken on the pc (yes, even a:) So one of my buddies in the IT will try it out on his pc or laptop tomorrow.
Come to think of it....I downloaded over 100gb of movies and shows from my friends pc without a problem but had trouble transferring it back to my pc. I had to do 1 or 2 movies at a time but still had problems locking up. I got about 3/4 of it til i finally said screw it and deleted the remaining movies. I wonder if it could be a USB issue not giving enough juice.

so you had movies from your friends computer put on the external and it worked fine, but it wouldn't transfer to your computer?

have you tried just opening a file on the external? maybe you should try a different usb? if you haven't done so already

Ok, so I brought the drive to my work to let one of the IT guys to try it out and he couldn't duplicate the problem...go figure  So, it works on my buddy's pc and the IT guy's pc...so this leads me to believe that there is an issue with my pc.

Not sure but I want to say this could possibly be a chipset driver issue? I thought that SP2 has the USB drivers not the chipset but I could be wrong. I don't know, I'm at a lost...

***UPDATE***
So after I came home from work I plugged the drive in and tried to copy some music over to the drive. With 15 seconds it locked up....everything's unresponsive then the infamous BSOD.
Reboot
tried again, this time plugged in a different location and plugged the add'l plug to make sure I'm getting enough power to the drive....tried copying files again and lock up with no BSOD
Reboot
Starting to think that my usb sucks a fat one so I plugged my PNY 1gb thumbdrive and copied the same files.......lock up
I really don't know what's the deal with this USB issue. The only thing I got plugged in the usb ports is my MX518 and my USB Logitech mic.
My pc can be such a gaylord sometimes....
