I am running a HP Professional workstation of P4 at 2.8GHz for about 1.5 years with the very same software and very same software version no.

In the past 1 mth., the rear system fan turns to max. if I were to run some very basic shareware game, like an old game called airXonix. And it continues to run at max speed non stop until I exit the game. The system is sensing that the CPU or the GPU is using more power, I guess?

However, with that same game running in the past 1.5 year, that didn't happen.

Same deal with some of the most basic 2D game, the other day I have 10 min. to kill and load up an old mah jong tile game. The sys. fan turns up at half speed instead of low speed everytime the graphics has some lame 2D animation on it. It moves back down to low speed when the game continues to run with the 2D animation stop.

Again, that lame 2D mahjong can be run on a 586, and it was running from time to time in the past 1.5 year, this never happens.

What is causing it?

Usually these are BIOS settings which enable this , or a program within the drivers and application , check for updates .

Sometimes it takes them years to fix a problem becuase people dont complain it exists and do nothing about it.

The temps contriollers for the system and fans are withingn the bios though , so if there is a fix it maybe just a bios fix that is needed .

they ran at max because when the sensor senses that the temperature is climbing the fan will compensate for the temp change by blowing faster. remount, and add as5 on the hsf and see, maybe there's nomore good contact bet. the 2.

I use the EXACT same box at work. Fan goes crazy anytime you do anything PROCESSOR intensive - video card doesnt matter. Rysher is correct. Remount - use arctic silver 5 - (7.99 at local electronics store) and you should be good.

On the asus you have applications where you can change the settings on this too and decrease it. Qfan control or something.

OP doesnt ahve an asus board. he's got an HP. and OEM computers doesnt have their on BIOS set up not made by ASUS.

I done the re-mount before I post. Same thing. I updated the BIOS, same thing.

Right now, I was thinking if there is an generic software that can control the temperature of any computer, including HP. Anywhere I can download something like that?

It seems somehow, the setting has been changed by some software within the computer. That's the only possibilities. But today, I check RegEdit, do a search under "temperature", I check MSconfig, there is nothing in Registry, start up program, or Services that ignites a high fan setting whenever the CPU is doing some lame calculation.

The BIOS of the system fan is set to the lowest setting, as it has been for the past 1.5+ yr.

Unless Win XP Pro has a thermal management setting that I don't know about.

I bet somewhere in some software that I installed, it forces the sys. fan to turn to high, something like if sensor senses temp = 59 C, turn it to high, whereas it should be at 69 C deg. but if there is something inside the hard drive, and I already search "services, Startup, and registry", where else can it be?
