Symantec partition Magic?

I was wondering is Symantec Partition Magic used for splitting up the Hard drive?

It's used for resizing/creating partitions on a hard drive without having to wipe the whole disk and start again.

Say you have a 120gb drive with only c: - you could make c: 60gb and d: 60gb, then change your mind and make c: 30gb, d: 80gb and e: 10gb

Using the basic tools windows includes, you'd have to format c: and then create the 2 partitions

Thx man, if i do use partition magic to create a partition will i need to format the new partition before i use it? and will it still be there i format my whole computer and install a fresh window? because normally i don't use partition magic to create partition so i am a first timer with this program lolz .

With partition magic if you create a new partition it'll take care of formatting it for use. If you want a particular format say fat32 or NTSF you might have to reformat to use that filesystem.
Just plain formatting won't delete partitions. However if you delete a partition then it becomes blank HD space disappearing as a logical drive.
Be aware however that if you have a high capacity hard drive (I think 160GB and above) and an older version of windows, when you reinstall windows, it might not recognize the full capacity of the driver. It's an easy fix though, just apply a service pack.

I agree. Two of my hard drives died within weeks of installing Partition Magic on them. One drive failure may be fluke but a second one three weeks later? Both drives were from different manufacturers and both failed in the same way (click-click sounds). Only commonality: Partition Magic. Never again.

As much as I despise PM, I've never heard of it causing hardware issues like this. Sounds more like you killed a couple of drives on dirty power than anything else. FWIW

I dunno. I installed the replacements (Seagates) in the same system with the same power supply but no PM and they run fine.

FYI, the first drive that died was the IBM GXP "Deathstar" so when it failed, I chalked it up to IBM's problem. However, when the second drive died a couple weeks later (it was a Western Digital or Maxtor, I can't remember) with the same exact symptoms, I began to suspect PM. Both drives ran fine for years and both failed within weeks of installing PM. I know it could be coincidence and there's no way to pinpoint the cause anymore but I really think it was PM.

I've never had a single issue with PM (various versions), it has always performed flawlessly. I think I'm in the majority too.
