I have a system here that has the 865PE motherboard. I am switching it over to an 865G based motherboard, both are Asus boards, the rest of the system will be the same parts.

Do you think switching boards will cause XP to not boot up? The systems will be the same parts besides going from an Asus 865pe board to an Asus 865g board.

WinXP should recognize all you periphericals by itself since you are swapping the motherboard.

I remember when I swapped my AMD setup for an Intel setup 18 mo abo, I simply swapped my SCSI controller in the new motherboard. WinXP detected all the new periphericals easily. Surprisingly, even if I did not reformat the entire hdd, it was working way much better than my crappy NF7-S setup.. So, to answer your question, you should be fine. It is not the best thing to do, but it works quite well.

It shouldn't screw the HAL up, but like everyone says, its best to start fresh, so you will be insured no problems.
