hi, i have 2 options for the o/s on my file server

windows server 2003
suse enterprise server 10

i want to setup raid 5 on 3 x 320gb drives

which would be the faster option

this will be software raid only as i cannot afford a controller and it is only going to be used for streaming media.

thanks

Windows OS RAID 5 write performance is generally poor. There might be some tricks to improve its performance, but I didn't find one that worked.

Linux OS RAID 5 writes perform well, at least sometimes.

my server at the moment is completely windows based. would it be worth changing to suse just for this?

Well that's up to you. If the write performance is meeting your needs, then probably not. The write performance would be enough for typical download speeds, etc., but I wouldn't want to do a lot of video editing on it for example.

The write performance should also be good enough for 100 Mb/s networking.

Other alternatives would be some other RAID level or on-board RAID or an add-on controller.
