surface pro 2 cpu speculation

MS probably won't degrade CPU or GPU performance. The Core i5-3317U in first Surface Pro has 2c/4t 1.7GHz/2.6GHz turbo clock speeds and HD 4000 graphics.

The 11.5W Haswell models are all performance regressions from that i5-3317u, so those are likely eliminated from consideation. The only 15W Haswell model released so far which could be generally considered an upgrade in overall performance is the i5-4300U (1.9/2.9GHz turbo, HD 4400 graphics). So i'll go with the i5-4300U if the Surface Pro 2 keeps around the same dimensions as its predecessor. With a newer low power LCD, battery life could be extended by a fairly good amount, even though the CPU TDP isn't much lower.

If MS goes for something thinner and lighter on the Surface Pro 2, the 11.5W Y series chips are a possibility. The trade off for close to same performance as older model with a Core i5-4300Y or Core i5-4302Y (both 1.6/2.3GHz turbo, HD 4200 graphics) could in exchange for less bulk. (Or it could be an unannounced CPU model with slightly better performance. Intel has done that for Apple in the past.)

Keep in mind that the IVR of Haswell increases the CPU TDP while removing some from the motherboard so the actual improvement would be more than 2W

Right, also remember haswell will drop idle power, extending battery life without reducing "official" TDP numbers. The surface pro chassis can already keep up with the previous 17w TDP so going lower provides little benefit.

I5-4250u is a likely candidate. Gives more gpu power without a noticeable decrease in cpu throughput.

On this site a few weeks ago I predicted that the Surface Pro 2 would use the Intel i5 4300U CPU. This is a 15W part.

Based on this site: http://techcrunch.com/2013/09/23/ra...r-microsofts-new-surface-2-and-surface-pro-2/

... it appears that it will instead use the i5 4302Y, which is the 11W part, or the i5 4200U, which is a 15W part. Hopefully, it is the 4200U, as this clocks 300mhz higher and also has the 4400 GPU instead of the 4000 GPU on the 4302Y.

Time will tell....

They are claiming 50% or so increased GPU performance, so i would guess something with HD 4400

It doesn't have to be standard SKU.
For example it could be one of those low power ones but with increased gpu clocks.

Yeah, it sounds like it might have a HD5000 based GPU, since that hits 50% faster performance than IB GT2 in Intel's marketing benchmarks. GT3 is available in 15W TDP CPUs, like the one the 2013 MBA uses (1.3/2.6GHz, HD5000). A 1.6/2.6GHz HD5000 15W version is possible, although I don't see any SKU available for that configuration. (The MBA's processor didn't show up officially either until after Apple started shipping it.)

edit: it uses an i5-4200U CPU with HD4400 graphics according to the Surface team's reddit AMA. http://news.thewindowsclub.com/surf...mpaign=Feed:+TheWindowsClub+(The+Windows+Club) Kind of disappointing.

Q: Which Intel HD model is in the Surface Pro 2?

A: HD4400.
...

Q: Specifically, which i5 processor will be used with the Surface Pro 2?

A:Intel Core i5-4200U
