In a 7-1 decision, the Supreme Court has ruled that Microsoft is not liable in a patent dispute with AT&T.

AT&T had sued Microsoft, alleging computers running the Windows operating system infringe on an AT&T technology that compresses speech into computer code. Microsoft acknowledged violations in the United States regarding the AT&T patent, while insisting the infringement should not be extended internationally.

Bravo to the Supreme Court for this decision. they actually did something right for a change! :p (My opinion BTW)

You may want to double check the article:
WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court sided with Microsoft Corp. on Monday in a case that restricts the reach of U.S. patents overseas.

Microsoft acknowledged violations in the United States regarding the AT&T patent, while insisting the infringement should not be extended internationally.

They are saying that it was overseas that didn't apply. Well I wouldn't expect the Supreme Court to apply it overseas anyway unless they were terminally dumb, every other country has its own patent and court system, I'm not sure how we would force a patent ruling on the world.

MS themselves said they DID have violations in the USA, and admitting it DOES make them liable.

So you may want to edit your headline a bit to include overseas :)

Well, at least the supreme court understands that the U.S. laws aren't global. Now time to teach the citizens...

I'm a U.S. citizen.......I understand our laws aren't global.......but that doesn't mean I don't think they should be. :p

That means that US companies are free to infringe on MS patents overseas then too and MS should have no problem with that right? They dont seem to mind violating patents by the smug admission they made saying that yeah we violated your patents, so what. But I guarantee you that they have a big problem when others do the same to them.
