So, I was with the wife at Chapters last wekend and thought I would grab a magazine to read by the pool, started looking through a few and thought "I have no freaking clue which one to buy". So I was wondering if people in this community had any suggestions as to which on to get.

I do not have a DSLR yet but I have selected the D60 as the entry level camera I want to get my feet wet with. I have also been reading up on how the DSLR works and what settings do what. I will be shooting just about everything but people with it, so anything with tips or tricks on taking better shots and not just reveiws on new products is what I'm looking for.

Thoughts?

I'm thinking you want books rather than magazines, if you want technique info instead of product news etc.

Understanding Exposure is one that gets mentioned a lot around here; I haven't actually read this particular one, but my understanding is it gives a great overview of general photo concepts.

Also, very important, get a copy of the manual for the camera you're looking at and momorize it. ;)

I have been reading books and online tutorials, but I feel I will be able to understand whats being said if I had the camera in front of me. This should be soon because I want it for my wine tour trip in August.

I am looking forward to getting my hands on the manual all most as I am for getting the camera itself.

Understanding Exposure mentioned by madFive is definitely a must if you're starting with photography, IMO.

as far as camera manual, i tend to recommend e-books by Thom Hogan. i have one for my D80, and it's a really great read. he does a great job explaining not only how to change settings but also goes much deeper about what really happens when you do change them.

magazines aren't a great source of information, but the one i read from time to time is Digital Photo Pro. sometimes they have some cool post processing techniques and maybe one or two articles that are worth reading, but not really a big deal.

Thanks for the reply northrop, I will check out Digital Photo Pro next time I'm around a magazine rack. as for Understanding Exposure, its allready on my buy list.

So much to read.

The UK photo mags destroy the us ones (Tho PDN is pretty good). As for books, look for Scott Kelby.
