Need to replace my ReadyNAS (PoS) that does CIFS/SMB shares only.

Have access to WSS 2008 R2 and thought I would go that way.

Needs to be rack-able but no more then 3U or 4U.

Currently using 6 x 1.5 TB 7.2K SATA drives in an expandable "RAID 5" like array.

Would want OS on separate (internal bay?) array from data array.

Supermicro has some options.

Any thoughts?

You are not giving a lot to go on here. Yes, Supermicro makes some good cases. I find them to be of pretty decent to fairly high quality, but you will pay a bit for it. Norco also has some decent options too, a little lower quality but often what seems to be at a little bit lower price as well.

Outside of that, I don't know what else you're looking for exactly as far as advice. You haven't specified anything about what you consider your needs to be. There are a lot of questions that could be asked.

Are you looking for dual power supply for redundancy? Or power-efficient for the home? Do you want something that can hold 16 drives? 24? more? less? I assume 3.5" drives, but you know what they say about assuming... Are you looking for just a chassis or a barebones setup with motherboard and other components? Do you have any other components that you need considered?

If you have any other details that you can provide it might help others to be able to give you some advice.
