Ok, a buddy of mine has a AMD 1Ghz sys with a 4200. (Ouch) He is about ready to build a new system in the next month or so, but in the mean time, his 4200 is really starting to show is age, especially in CS. Do you guys have any suggestions as to ideas on how to increase his fps?
I already have it set to 800x600, with no AA/AF. Granted, his CPU is probably the biggest bottleneck (Can ya'all confirm?)

I can't imagine that a 4200 wouldn't be badass at CS. Seriously that game is old and not that demanding on hardware.

If he's not getting awesome framerates on that setup then he needs to check his system configuration. Something is wrong.

You can overclock his videocard to gain performance. Some 4200's have been known to be able to hit close to or even higher than Ti4600 speeds. Which isn't exactly a slouch for performance in older DX8 games.

Maybe with good cooling that 4200 could overclocks at 4400 or 4600´s clock and mem speeds.

On older systems the best way to increase performance is to reinstall windows.

Yea, we have reformatted and such, with minimal luck. I'm having a hard time fig. out what else I can do besides starting to overclock the card (not sure the success I will have due to it's age).

i get a steady ~40 fps wich sucks but im running a p3 733 and using a geforce 2 mx400... so your friend should be hitting constant 100 fps with no probs.

Yea 1ghz should be way plenty for cs. Didnt the original half life ship when 350 mhz processors were mid range?

Yea.. I'm running the 56 WHQL drivers, and those seem to get the greatest speed. Jaz also has hodge-padge ram installed as well. There are several issues that I'm trying to figure out

I could play CS at 1024x786 with 70FPS with my TNT2Ultra and a Celeron 100X8.5, something in his system is messed up.

With stock cooling my Ti4200 can clock to 290/600.

Seems about average, most people I've talked to get higher core overclocks with better cooling, I really don't care to spend any cash on a bigger cooler myself...

Actually I think Half Life came out when the Pentium II 300 was KING.

Could be, i remember playing quake 2 on a k6-2 350. I got a booboo 2 around that time.
I remember until that point running quake in software and playing DM for the first time. Ahh memories.

That k6-2 went to 400 on air woot!

Anyways point being quake 2 shiped in what like 96? Whatever anything since 2000 should have no issues running cs.
I think hl shiped in 97/98
I thought it was more like 500mhz procs were king. I could be wrong though that was back in the day.

Hello,

Just sold my 9800XT in anticipation of the next gen cards and im using a Ti4200 . I run FarCry like a champ ( OpenGL 960X720 Everything maxed no AA/AF) I am very surprised at the performance of this card. Im using the latest Forceware fron Nvidia's site. Halo , COD , UT2K4 all run like butter. Not bad for a $60 dollar video card ;) Id say the Ti4200 has a fair amount of life to it IMO. Upgrade MB/Proc and wait for next gen cards and price drops.

I tried lowering the settings on Far Cry and it just didn't look right in anything but 1024x768.

UT2004 doesn't seem to look right in anything less than 1280x1024. Just my opinion.

Half Life came out when the P2/450 was on top, and everyone (I did, where were you?) had those awesome V2 PCI cards, SLI if you were lucky.

I used to play CS @ 800x600 on my Celeron300A @ 400 or so with a Voodoo2, and it was steady.

After that, I've had a few P3s, a TNT2, a GF2MX/GF2/GF3 and now this rig, and the only one that ever started dropping frames was the really damn old one.

Something is wrong with the system. A Ti4200 should blow counter-strike away.

My ti4200 does 40-60 FPS in UT2k4, and around 30 fps in FarCry. CS is no problem :p
