Been dabling into speakers now and i wanted some decent bookselves for music and movies. I started out with 3 bookselves that are readily available. Using their 30day return policy, i went out to audition from polk, yamaha and the much famed insignia. The setup starts with cds, sony dvd (dvp-nc85h), pioneer elite a-35r and some rat shack 18g stranded speaker wire. This is a budget system prolly around 350ish for the whole thing! All these can be found for under $80 for the pair when they go on sale.
first up is the Polk M10/R15.
This was the biggest disappointment of them all. It did the upper range decently but all other areas didnt fair so well. Midrange was severely lacking. Vocals were thin and bright. Bass was not exteded at all and no impact unless you turned up to uncomfortable levels. Definately needs a sub to cover all the ranges.
Next up is the best buy brand insignia.
The most balanced out the 3. Very suprised by the sound quality. Also the biggest in physical size. Had the most warm sound overall with solid mids. Even though i dont have any CRTs around, im still weary about not having shielded speakers.
Lastly the Yamaha NS-AM70s
my fav out of the 3. The midrange isnt as solid as the insignia but it has more bass. With this pair i felt like i dont need a sub to enjoy bass. been using these for ventrilo and gaming as well and its been preforming good.
for headphone refrences the insignia would be the senn HD201 and the yamaha would be the koss ksc-75. Both are incredible values and are solid for their price. Maybe when i get better supporting gear it will be time to move up just like i do with the headphones. But first i need a better source and amp for my upcoming darth beyers.
