OK, ill try to kepe this as clear as possible, listing the problems, then everything ive done.
My system:
XP 2200+
420watt PSU
Radeon 9800XT
MSI KT3 Ultra 2 with VIA Chipset
Some generic network card
Maxtor 80GB HD
Liteon 52x Drive
Generic Floppy
My problems with the original card were simple enough, overheating causing artifacts. After a nifty RMA I was satisfied untill recently. Now im having a few odd issues. First of all my video card will no longer run in AGP 4X (my board only supports 1, 2, and 4) The card only runs at 2X. However my GeForce4 Ti4600 will run at 4X leading me to believe my board is not the issue. Another interesting problem, regardless if I have Over Drive set or not the drivers always want to use it. The core is overclocked to 418MHz temps are good because the cooling rig in my case blows right over the heatsink (both sides) 61C load. Doom3 and Counter-Strike Source both give me artifacts at these speeds and i use ATI Tool to lower the core. When attempting to fix my AGP problem i ended up with artifacts (ones that i hear are related to RAM temps.) I'll explain this when i explain how i tried to fix it. Recently in every application even sometimes sitting at my desktop VPU recover will either come up or i will get a total system lock up.
Ok so on to everything i've tried thus far. Drivers...Ive tried cat 4.5 4.6 4.7 beta 4.9 and the very latest Omega Releases. Problems are consistant. Yes i did use Driver Cleaner correctly every time, and in some cases i formatted (twice now.) Also, i used driver cleaner to remove any Nvidia drivers that may have been left behind. Chipset and AGP drivers for my mother board. Ive used every AGP driver for this board from the very earliest to the very latest with no success. Ive tried several 4 in 1 via driver sets (VIA states they support all via chipsets) again with no luck. I unisntalled SMARTGART and Control panal in efforts to force the card into 4X AGP. After uninstalling both i spent time looking through my regisrty untill i found a listing of supported AGP speed (1 2 4 8) and set speed (2) forcing the set speed to 4 (including the proper extension line at the end of the key.) Unfortunately this did not stop any of my problems and infact could be the cause of more artifacts (as i got them after this stage.) So I have been unsucessful at getting this card into 4X AGP as well as fixing it being forced to 418MHz regardless if over drive is on or not. I've disable VPU recovery in an attempt to stop it from crashing my games and even at my desktop (with no success.) Now instead of recovering i simply lock up and require a hard boot. I have updated my bios twice today using various versions in an attempt to fix these issues, no success. Im pretty much out of ideas on how to work this one out. I have a bios dump on my drive now and i can screenshot my registry/control pannel showing what is going on if that can help anyone. The last thing i have to try is running the card in another machine. Here at home i don't have a machine that will run it so i will be taking it to a friend's house by the weekend to test. Ive heard too little power causes instability and too much heat as well, unfortuantely i dont think these are the problems.
PS: another interesting thing i noticed in my registry was that the direct 3d version was missing. I didn't think this had any affect on these problems, but just info incase it does. As far as direct X, im on DX9c with all the windows critical updates isntalled. I havn't downloaded SP2 yet.
