Hello there. I've known about this place for aaaages but thought I'd register to give my thumbs up for all the amazing info I found in this forum while helping my friends (and now myself) choose a display.
Unlike my friend, I only have a budget of $300, which straddles the border of nearly all TN and entry level IPS. I've narrowed down to a couple choices, but still can't decide. The tradeoffs are not clearly in favour of one monitor.
What I have:
5 year old Dell E228WFP 22" 1680*1050 5ms 800:1. Its a great monitor considering the age, totally uniform color, no bleed, okay contrast. Only significant issue is vertical viewing angle which makes things at top of screen go dark if I lean back on my chair. Upgrading cause parents want to replace my sister's crummy old CRT with an LCD, as its terrible and "bad for her eyes". So they're getting me something better and this will go to her.
What I do:
Surfing and PC gaming mostly. I'd say 80%. Rest is movies and coding. I don't mind black bars in movies (you still get em in most 1080p content), and I already have an HTPC hooked up to 50" sammy plasma for all that stuff. The colors blow away the 23" Acer 1080p monitor its connected to.
Things I am looking for:
- overall image quality (ideally, would like an IPS that satisfies all other requirements)
- 24" or higher
- response/input good enough to be a non-issue for gaming
- no backlight bleed, dead pixels, tinting or uniformity issues, if my 5year old budget Dell can do it, I'm not putting up with it now.
- 16:10
- Displayport would be nice, but not necessary.. just got a 460 recently cause I had to, so no eyefinity for a while
- I don't care for things like speakers, webcams, or even fancy stands.
Possible choices, suggest others if you can:
ASUS VW266H 25.5" 1920x1200 $260 after MIR. Has everything I want except image quality. If I do go with TN after all, its this, or a 24" 16:10 panel with superior quality (which I could use a recommend on)
Considered/lusted Dell U2410, as it has everything I want. Price is the biggest downside, out of my budget. Maybe if I could get it under 400 in Canada, and definitely under 350. The QC issues have me spooked too, especially permanent tinting? It has to last me 5 years.
Strongly considering Dell U2311H and NEC EA231WMi (both around $290, unless Dell.ca has another day of deals to drop it back to $240). Theres a $100-150 premium for IPS compared to equivalent TN monitor; the 23" size and 1080p res don't thrill me. The QC issues and possible ghosting worry me as well. I'll be going instore to check out the NEC and see if the IPS quality jump is big enough to justify these downsides.
I'm not sure of what else to consider. If I do end up getting just 24" 1080p TN, I'd rather find them on sale for around 160 and get two. Considering ASUS VW246H (or VE246H, which is better?) and the Acer G245H. Anything better?
Sorry for the wordy post, this really has to last me 5 years and I want to be happy with it. but at this budget it looks like I'd have to make tradeoffs. Suggestions and ideas would be appreciated!
